Ausable Freshwater Center is getting out for the thaw! AFC regularly samples the water chemistry of 30 stream sites on the Ausable River and some of its tributaries. Spring thaw is a particularly important time to test the streams for conductivity, which can be used to determine salt concentrations. As more towns in our watershed adopt new practices to reduce salt usage on roads, this data shows us how their work affects our streams over time. Ever wondered how the use of salt brine helps reduce overall road salt use? Would you like to get a close-up look at a live-edge plow blade? Did you know plow trucks can be equipped with sensors to detect road temperature? You're invited to join us on Tuesday, March 18th, at 9 am as we learn about all these things from local experts. The staff of Peru's Town Highway Department has been leading the way on road salt reduction in the Ausable River watershed. They are excited to share their experiences with the public and will be on hand to explain all the technologies and techniques they are using to maintain safe winter roads with less road salt. AFC staff checked out several ice jams along the lower East Branch Ausable River on Monday. One of the larger jams covered a nearly 1.5 miles stretch between the Upper Jay falls parking area along NYS Route 9N and the 9N bridge in the hamlet of Upper Jay. With no major rain in the immediate forecast, these ice jams appear to be loosening and breaking up as melt water from tributary streams has increased. We continue to monitor the ice in Upper Jay and will share updates as the situation changes. We want to thank our wonderful volunteers who came out to take hardwood cuttings with our ACN staff last week! ?? With their help, we were able to collect over 5,000 shrub willow and dogwood cuttings.?These cuttings will be propagated in our greenhouse this spring and used for restoration projects. National Invasive Species Awareness Week is a great time to talk about simple things we can all do to help prevent the spread of non-native bugs, plants, and other organisms. In warmer months, our River Steward sets up and maintains wader wash stations. We also partner with local organizations to provide boot brush stations at key locations. These simple stations are excellent ways to clean gear that moves between water bodies. By giving our outdoor gear a good cleaning and allowing it to dry between uses, we can prevent unwanted hitchhikers from moving into new territory. Interested in learning more?
