Check out this news story and newly released renderings for a view of the HSVTOL X-plane we’re developing today and a vision of how these technologies could be applied to larger aircraft in the future. https://lnkd.in/ec64Zdzy The high-speed, vertical take-off and landing (HSVTOL) X-plane is part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program called SPRINT. Aurora’s concept uses fan-in-wing technology to provide fast, runway-independent mobility. “The SPRINT program offers the opportunity to deliver a game-changing capability to the warfighter,” said Michael Caimona, president and CEO of Aurora Flight Sciences. “High-speed, stealth, runway-independent transport could help keep warfighters safe and effective in contested environments, so no domain is out of reach.”

In 2014, our twin-engine, turbo-diesel-powered Orion Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance UAV performed an 80-hour flight, setting a world record for the longest flight duration for a remotely controlled UAV. The aircraft flew with 1,000 lb. of ballast and, upon landing, had 1,700 lb. of fuel remaining, enough to fly for an additional 37 hours. Interested in learning more about our history? #DYK Our Virginia facility houses a remote operations center where our flight team supports crewed and uncrewed flight tests and demonstrations with our Centaur optionally piloted aircraft. https://lnkd.in/eiGqDdmN An air vehicle operator and mission payload operator work together to control and monitor the aircraft throughout the entire flight from aircraft startup to shut down. This ground control station offers: ??? Integrated displays of onboard systems ?? Multiple video feeds from the aircraft ?? Dual-redundant data links that allow for remote control of the aircraft as a surrogate UAS ?? Communications with air traffic control These capabilities allow us to safely test hardware, software, and procedures while efficiently delivering the data needed to support your mission.

Francisco has been with Aurora for 12 years and graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach campus with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Today he works with our Mechanical and Propulsion design team leading multidisciplinary teams and designing vehicle subsystems and components. He also has his private pilot license, and when not at work he enjoys flying, hiking, and spending time with family. In addition to his full-time position, Francisco is a part of Aurora’s chapter of the Boeing Familia Employee Resource Group. The group is dedicated to leading Latino and multicultural awareness, promoting leadership opportunities, and increasing community impact.
