RBLD is proud to have worked on the River City Casino. Lighting was used to support the image of the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair, while still supporting the Missouri Gaming Commission's rigorous illumination requirements in unobtrusive ways. With widely varied design aspects for each environment, the lighting is able to highlight each area's design aesthetics. _________________________________________ The River City Casino won the IES Award of Merit. A Story of Connections: How RBLD’s Chicago Office Came to Be Opening a Reed Burkett Lighting Design office in Chicago has been a long-time goal, and with the addition of Aurora Lighting Design, that vision is now a reality. This expansion, however, is not just about geography, but it speaks to the professional and personal connections that brought us to this juncture. My association with Lisa J. Reed goes back to her days as a student at the University of Kansas, where I was a guest critic for her senior studio project. Since 2005, we’ve worked in the same city, crossing paths in the St. Louis lighting community and developing a mutual respect for each other’s work. Bringing our firms together to form RBLD felt like a natural evolution of that relationship. Carla Bukalski, has been a force in Chicago lighting for many years, and her ability to bridge technical expertise with creative vision makes her fittingly qualified to lead our Chicago studio. Though she and I have known each other for years, it was Lisa’s long-standing friendship with Carla that brought us together in this exciting endeavor. Leslie North and I have known each other for most of our lighting careers.?Her father was one of my professors at Penn State, introducing me to the world of computer science during my freshman semesters. Leslie and I have toiled together on many IES committees and have long shared a mutual admiration for our commitments to elevating the profession of lighting design. She has built Aurora Lighting Design, an RBLD Studio into a firm known for its excellence, and now, as Aurora becomes an RBLD studio, we have the opportunity to move forward together. This expansion is more than just a new office—it’s a maturing of the relationships that have shaped us over the years. I am excited for what is ahead as we continue to grow, collaborate, and create exceptional lighting design. But wait, there's more! Be sure to follow Reed Burkett Lighting Design and Aurora Lighting Design, an RBLD Studio, for more connection stories from our other principals. #LightingDesign #Connections #RBLD

  • Today, We Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At RBLD, we’re privileged to have designed the lighting for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, a space that embodies his legacy of justice, peace, and hope. The careful interplay of light and shadow at the memorial was designed to honor his profound impact and illuminate the enduring power of his words: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our offices are closed to allow our team to reflect on his legacy and the lessons he continues to teach us about equality and service. Dr. King’s vision reminds us of the importance of creating brighter futures for all, not only through the spaces we design but through the actions we take every day. Let’s carry his message forward and continue to work toward a more just and compassionate world. hashtag #MLKDay #LightingDesign #Service #CommunityImpact #DrKingLegacy

  • Connections Stories - Part Two!

Accomplished lighting expert with outstanding leadership skills, a diverse background in electrical engineering, lighting design, marketing, sales, leadership, and innovation with an exceptional industry reputation.

Personal Connections-Building Our Lighting Design Legacy Together: RBLD’s journey with Aurora Lighting Design is more than a business expansion—it’s the culmination of years of connection, collaboration, and shared purpose... Lisa Reed and I first met as Architectural Engineering students at The University of Kansas and our Chicago connection began early, with a second-year class trip to Chicago/Oak Park. After that, whether we were breaking into our sack lunches together at 10am in 3rd year studio or making huge piles of leaves and jumping into them from the steps of Marvin Hall, Lisa was always the responsible one, balancing out my… let’s call it “spirited energy.” (She is still the "calm" to my "wild"!) Our friendship really deepened as we embarked on parallel careers in lighting design, even though we lived in different states. Lisa has been a constant in my adult life, from being the matron of honor at my wedding to becoming my youngest child’s godmother. Over the years, we’ve supported each other through life’s biggest milestones, both personal and professional.? It’s been a long and storied partnership of support, laughter, and shared ambition. After graduating, I moved to that city I’d fallen in love with, Chicago, where I met Leslie North, founder of Aurora Lighting Design, Inc. (now Aurora Lighting Design, an RBLD Studio). Leslie was my first ‘real’ boss; her leadership, vision, and passion for giving back to the industry had a huge impact on my early career.? And of course, on her first business trip to Chicago, I introduced Lisa to Leslie, planting the seeds of what would eventually unite us all as one team today. And then there’s Randy Burkett, another key figure in this journey. Fun fact: Randy was a guest critic for Lisa’s senior studio project at KU. None of us could have guessed back then that our paths would eventually cross like this, but it feels like everything has come full circle. Today, I’m thrilled to lead the Chicago studio as RBLD and Aurora Lighting Design unite as one team. Our shared commitment to creativity and excellence in lighting design is stronger than ever, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll achieve together as we illuminate spaces across the Midwest and beyond. But wait, there's more! Be sure to follow Reed Burkett Lighting Design and Aurora Lighting Design, an RBLD Studio for more connection stories from our other principals. Here’s to continuing this incredible story—together! #LightingDesign #MergersAndAcquisitions #Friendship #Business #Partnership #Stories

Have you heard the news? In November, Aurora Lighting Design, Inc. joined forces with Reed Burkett Lighting Design as Aurora Lighting Design, an RBLD Studio. We couldn’t be more excited to unite our teams, expand our reach, and serve a broader market. But this milestone is more than just a business decision—it’s a story rooted in years of friendship, collaboration, and shared passion for lighting design. My journey to this moment started in college, when I met a wild, gregarious classmate named Carla. Carla and I were both studying Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas. We carpooled between Lawrence and Kansas City, spent all-nighters in studio, and even survived a road trip from KU to St. Louis together. She became a confidante, a partner-in-crime*, and eventually, a lifelong friend. (* no crimes were actually committed) Even as our careers took us to different cities, our connection endured. A business trip to Chicago early in my career led me to reconnect with Carla, meet her colleagues, and hear about her incredible work in lighting design. Over the years, Carla and I grew even closer, supporting each other through weddings, kids, and career milestones. When I started RBLD, Carla was there to help in countless ways. So when RBLD began to expand into Chicago, it felt like destiny to ask Carla—after 30 years of experience in the Chicago market—to help me build the business there. And as it turns out, one of those colleagues she had introduced me to all those years ago was none other than Leslie North, the founder of Aurora Lighting Design, Inc. I’m thrilled to see everything come full circle with Aurora Lighting Design joining forces with RBLD as our newest studio. Together, we’re ready to shine a light on Midwest talent, showcasing creativity and design excellence that resonates with our clients here and around the globe. I, for one, can’t wait to see how this story continues. Randy Burkett, FIALD, FIES, LC #lightingdesigners #lightingdesign #mergersandacquisitions #friendship #business #partnership #stories #RBLD

  • ?? Reflections on an Amazing Day Together ?? Last week, we had the privilege of bringing both of our studios together in our new Chicago location for a day filled with connection, creativity, and collaboration. It was an incredible opportunity to celebrate the team that makes Reed Burkett Lighting Design so special. The day was packed with activities that brought us closer and reinforced our shared vision: ? Touring the Chicago studio space along with the rest of the historic Chicago Board of Trade building ? Team-building activities that had us laughing, learning, and strengthening our bonds ? A fresh set of professional headshots - thank you to Brian Powell! One of the highlights? The thought-provoking "What Color Is Your Brain?" workshop facilitated by the fantastic Douglas Gustafson. It was eye-opening to see how our different strengths and perspectives come together to make our team even stronger. Gathering in person reminded us how much we accomplish when we’re together—whether solving challenges, creating innovative designs, or just sharing a laugh over coffee. Here’s to many more moments like these and to building brighter, more connected futures—together. ???? #LightingDesign #TeamRBLD #NewChicagoStudio #WhatColorIsYourBrain #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork
