A core part of Aurelia Institute’s mission is contributing to the development of an inclusive, mission-ready future workforce, on space as well as on Earth. To that end, it’s been our privilege to host a regular roster of exceptional interns from schools and organizations around the world who share our dedication to excellence and diversity in the space industry. Over the last year Aurelia has worked with six remarkable individuals, each with their own unique stories and contributions. Thanks to our amazing 2023-24 interns and volunteers! “We at Aurelia work on the human lived experience of space. So in addition to thinking about the next generation of the shells for the architecture itself, how do we design the artifacts on the inside—the experiences, the products, the tools, that make it a life worth living in space.” Watch Ariel Ekblaw's talk at #ISSRDC 2024: https://lnkd.in/e8vnSMNP #spaceindustry #research #spaceexploration #architecture #design

Introducing the TESSERAE Space Habitat Pavilion! Following a successful soft launch this summer in conjunction with ISSRDC, we are excited to announce that our full-scale space habitat mock-up will debut to the public this fall as part of the “Home Beyond Earth” exhibit at The Museum of Flight in Seattle. The TESSERAE Pavilion has been in the works for two years, as the team has experimented with the design and building the structure and its interior components. Now for the first time the team has built the complete Pavilion, outside and in, with never-before-seen structural components and interior tiles, realizing Aurelia’s vision of an interactive exhibition that brings the future of space habitats down to Earth for all to explore. The TESSERAE Pavilion will open to the public on September 28 and run through the exhibit’s close in January, 2025. We hope you’ll check it out! At the 2024 International Conference on Environmental Systems this summer, VP of Engineering Annika Rollock, PhD presented “Development of a Flight-Scale TESSERAE Habitat Concept for Biotechnology Research Outpost Applications,” a paper on Aurelia's TESSERAE Orbital Case Study. Co-authored by Rollock, Max Pommier, and Ariel Ekblaw of Aurelia Institute as well as William O'Hara of Final Frontiers LLC, the paper covers the mission overview of a projected biotechnology research station in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), applies human-centered design principles and rigorous engineering figures of merit to the design, interior concepts, power and life support systems, outfitting considerations, and more.

Aurelia Institute designs geodesic spacecraft for "leading good lives" in orbit | In Dezeen, CEO Ariel Ekblaw and co-founder/Chief Design Officer Sana Sharma discuss the vision behind the TESSERAE space habitat pavilion. "If you see images of the inside of the ISS, it looks like a science lab. There are wires everywhere. People look at that and they don't see themselves in that future...What would it take to design very intentionally, a different type of space in space? A different type of habitat that's way more welcoming and engaging to a broader swath of humanity, [not just] crazy talented astronauts, but open community?" I really liked being in the Aurelia Institute’s #TESSERAE Pavilion, inspired by so many people in #space, including Josh Simpson Glass and myself. It’s about the merging of so many viewpoints – from engineers to students to artists to astronauts.? So many people contributed to launching this fascinating exhibit - a mockup of a habitat that will assemble itself in #space.
