When I first the news, I was a little bit surprised that a second #HearingAids manufacturer, Signia Hearing, decided to go with Bluetooth Classic in the BCT IX. I was curious to understand why. With thanks to Signia for inviting me, I flew in to their launch event to learn more from Lisa A. Perhacs, Au.D. and Mike O'Neil. In addition to the connectivity, we covered everything else that went in to this platform update. You might be surprised to learn what got a big applause from the HCPs in the room. Some thoughts on #WorldHearingDay The World Health Organization calls on "individuals of all ages to empower themselves to ensure healthy ears and hearing for themselves and others” including checking one's hearing regularly. The proliferation of consumer screeners like the Hearing Number and the Apple hearing test make it more possible than ever on global basis. But do they serve their purpose well? There has been a lot of online debate especially since the Apple hearing test was released. In this article I explore possible ways to make consumer hearing screeners that align more closely with actual experience while providing interpretations beyond simplistic grades like "mild" and "moderate" hearing loss. Postscript 5 March: Several people wrote either in the comments or privately that there are far better ways to test hearing than the pure tone test. No disagreement there. However the combined weight of Apple & Johns Hopkins, whose Hearing Number was standardized in a Consumer Technology Association / ANSI standard, guarantees continued broad adoption. Rarely have I written a piece that became out of date so quickly after hitting the send button, but #Auracast infrastructure and deployments are accelerating so rapidly now that it couldn't be helped. Even if that will become even more obvious in the weeks ahead, enough has happened to show why 2025 is the year Auracast will move from "it's coming" to "it's here."
