When I learned this, it was like a light switch turned on. ?? I'm in my 40s - for a few more years anyway - and realized that yeah...I was settling, financially. I made some decent decisions early (ish) in my career... - bought a home and refinanced a few times - invested in my 401k - invested in some broad based ETFs in a brokerage account - set up an estate plan when the kids were younger - invested in 529s for the kids - enjoyed a decent quality of life BUT... at some point a few years ago, I woke up and flipped the table around entirely. I absolutely suffered from Status Quo Bias!!! Here's what was totally WRONG! ?? I was sitting on more cash than I wanted. ?? I was in the same few ETFs for over a decade - and they were not doing that great relative to the market. ?? I made a few mistakes on trades during covid (damn too much time at home!) ?? Each year, at tax time, I lamented how much better my year could have been if I had been more thoughtful about key financial choices. ?? I had no financial advisor I could trust - and didn't really believe those existed. ?? I kept looking at investments I wanted to buy - some stocks, funds, real estate - I even researched, lightly, ...but never pulled the trigger. ?? I wanted change in my career, in my life! I wanted to do something meaningful, in line with my purpose...launch a company!! I needed to know that my family would be OK. Who could I blame?
