I am thrilled to present our #RSCPoster titled "Understanding Surface Functionalization and Saturation Index for Mineral Growth on Polymeric Surfaces". Here is the pitch for the poster - Mineral precipitation reactions in porous media can significantly alter porosity and permeability. However, predicting reaction rates and their impact on formation properties remains challenging due to limited understanding of precipitation kinetics and mechanisms, as well as the inherent heterogeneity of natural porous media. This study develops a novel experimental platform leveraging 3D printing to enable reproducible mineral precipitation experiments in controlled, heterogeneous porous media systems. A fundamental aspect of this approach is understanding mineral precipitation kinetics on the 2D polymer surfaces used to fabricate 3D-printed media. Here, we modify high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) surfaces via sulfonation to enhance calcite precipitation from supersaturated solutions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM microscopy analysis validate the presence of calcite precipitation on the films. Weight-based precipitation experiments confirm that increased surface functionalization backed up by decrease in contact angle measurements showing increase in surface energies associated to overcome precipitation/ nucleation barrier for mineral growth and higher solution saturation indices promote greater calcite precipitation. Please feel free to ask questions or offer your comments. #RSCMat #RSCEnergy #RSCEng

New Publication Alert ?? I’m happy to have coauthored and contributed to this wonderful book chapter! The paper discusses how waste can be transformed into a useful biopolymer, as well as the challenges in the current niche and future directions in this field. I worked on this with my advisor alongside preparing for my fall commencement last December. Thank you, Symone Alexander, Ph.D. for your guidance Link to the book chapter — https://lnkd.in/e8ArH7XR I look forward to sharing more of this works with the world through authorship and coauthorship. The chapter is ready to be cited as the DOI is active. Thank you
