Aubertine and Currier is pleased to announce the completion of the newly renovated Administration Building at the Town of Webster’s Water Resource Recovery Facility. As part of a larger effort to expand and upgrade the WRRF, A&C collaborated with Barton & Loguidice, the prime firm, to enhance this essential facility, supporting its vital daily operations. The existing portion of the Administration Building was constructed in the 1980s and consisted of offices, a small laboratory, locker rooms, and a garage. Aubertine and Currier was tasked to renovate and enlarge the Administration Building by designing a 3,400-square-foot addition that more than doubled the occupied space of the building. As a key component of the project, a brand-new 740-square-foot laboratory was added with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities that give facility staff the ability to monitor, test, and experiment while keeping up with the plant’s processing activities. A new 750-square-foot break room features a full kitchen for staff, audio-visual equipment for training and presentations, and modular furniture that allows for easy reconfiguration based on the needs of the facility. Since the central corridor of the building connects all new spaces, A&C was able to seamlessly integrate cabinetry as well as space for the copier and other office supplies for easy access to all facility staff. Newly expanded and modernized locker rooms and a laundry room create the potential for a larger workforce of both men and women in the future. A new conference room features a kitchenette as well as new audio-visual equipment that creates a dedicated space for meetings and presentations for staff and visitors alike.

Architectural Design by Aubertine and Currier to Transform Plattsburgh’s WRRF Fa?ade. Aubertine and Currier was commissioned to provide architectural design services for the City of Plattsburgh to improve the fa?ade of the city’s water resource recovery facility (WRRF). The project is part of a broader effort to integrate the waterfront of Lake Champlain into the cityscape through beautification and increased public access. In collaboration with CDM Smith, A&C was able to elevate the plant’s appearance and create a space where locals and visitors alike can visit and appreciate the rich history of the lake’s harbor district. The original WRRF was constructed in the 1960s in a brutalist style with concrete and angular geometry emerging as prominent design characteristics. Situated on a 17-acre parcel with over 2,000 feet of shoreline at the inlet of the Saranac River, the facility has undergone numerous additions and renovations throughout its lifespan. Most recently, A&C teamed with CDM Smith to design and oversee the construction of a new Chemical Disinfection Building for the plant that was completed in 2021. Drawing on design motifs and materials from the Chemical Disinfection Building, A&C introduced numerous elements around the WRRF that incorporate contemporary materials and create visual interest for onlookers to the waterfront landscape. These new elements bind the facility’s overall aesthetic together by connecting each part of the plant through cohesive design. In doing so, A&C was able to create value in the surrounding areas for potential future development. One of the main parameters of the project, as well as one of the major challenges, was the need to contend with the existing wastewater equipment and building structures. The day-to-day operations of the WRRF are vital to the city’s water system and need to be maintained at all times. In an effort to minimize the impact on the existing infrastructure, A&C proposed that all of the new elements attach directly to the buildings and structures without interruptions to the plant and its activities. A new garage is also proposed on the south side to house the emergency bypass pumps safely and ensure that they are protected. The west side of the plant received new fa?ade treatment of composite wood, metal siding, metal roofing, and a large overhead canopy for the administration building to delineate the entrance and shield the walkways from snow, ice, and rain. Each of the components of this project play a role in beautifying the WRRF and ultimately pave the way for future improvements that could bring out the potential of this unique lakefront area of the community.
