We are deeply saddened by the passing of surveying legend, Jim Austin. Jim was dedicated to the surveying industry and retired from Atwell after 36 years with our company, where he was affectionately called “Grumpy.” To honor him, we are creating a surveying scholarship in his memory. We are incredibly grateful for everything he did for his teammates, our company, and the surveying industry. “I can remember working with Jim early on and being intimidated by his Grumpy demeanor. He always made you do the jobs right and in a timely fashion. I truly appreciated his work ethic once I started as a Crew Chief. Then I really understood why, when, and how to do things the Grumpy way, now the Lump way.” - James Lumpkin, coworker at Atwell “Jim Austin was a friend and one of the best coworkers you could ask for. He was always one of the first to volunteer for the difficult assignments and spent many months on the road in North Dakota and Minnesota for us.
