As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to recognize the significant contributions of Black leaders who have dedicated their careers to uplifting their communities and advocating for equity. This month serves as a reminder of the rich history and struggles of Black individuals while highlighting the achievements and progress made over the years. In the Lancaster region, several influential Black leaders continue to make a meaningful impact on their communities. One such leader is Jennifer Craighead Carey, the managing partner and CEO of Barley Snyder LLP, a law firm in central Pennsylvania with more than 130 lawyers. Jen specializes in management-side labor and employment law. Giving back to the community has been a central focus of her career. Over her 31 years of practicing law, Jen has served on numerous regional nonprofit boards, including those that support marginalized communities. Through her representation and advocacy, Jen aims to inspire current and future generations to continue striving for?social?justice and equality. She supports local organizations that empower marginalized groups, attends events that celebrate their achievements, and amplifies their voices in discussions about?social?change.

As part of Attollo’s Black History Month celebrations, we are proud to highlight the inspiring work of Katrina Holmes, a dedicated mentor who is transforming the lives of student athletes. With a deep commitment to guiding students on their paths to college, the workforce, or entrepreneurship, Katrina emphasizes the importance of prioritizing academics before athletics. Through a combination of individualized support and group sessions, she ensures that each student has the tools they need to succeed academically while pursuing their athletic goals. Katrina’s approach goes beyond just academic support. She offers personalized mentoring, tutoring, and connects students with professionals who have achieved success in their desired fields. This not only helps students gain a deeper understanding of the academic and eligibility requirements they need to meet but also exposes them to potential career opportunities. In addition to her mentorship, Katrina organizes enriching college visits that allow students to experience their sport at the next level, tour campuses, and meet with admissions representatives. These visits provide students with invaluable insights into the college application process, helping them make informed decisions about their future. Katrina Holmes is a beacon of support, ensuring that student athletes are well-equipped to thrive both on and off the field. Through her dedication, she is empowering the next generation of leaders. We were honored and inspired by Isaac Etter, founder of?Identity, during his visit to Attollo Prep! Isaac’s mission with?Identity?is to create a world where adopted and foster children feel seen, heard, and valued. During his visit, he spoke about the powerful concept of?perception—the pivotal moment when a child first realizes they’ve been adopted. This moment significantly shapes how they see themselves, their story, and their place in the world. Isaac emphasized the importance of understanding this shift in perception when working with adopted students and meeting them where they are, acknowledging the complexities of their journey. He also shared how building?self-resiliency?and celebrating?small wins?along the way can help students feel successful, valued, and capable of overcoming challenges. Thank you, Isaac, for sharing your vision and insights with us through?Identity. Your work is making a powerful impact, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from you and continue creating a space where all students feel supported and empowered. Marvin Sanders II, CMAA., the Director of Athletics and Student Activities at Ephrata Area School District, has dedicated his career to empowering young athletes, particularly within the African American community. He is deeply passionate about shining a light on the many diverse career paths available in the world of athletics, beyond just playing on the field. Through his work, he aims to break down barriers and broaden the scope of what young athletes believe is possible for their futures, emphasizing that leadership takes many forms and that passion, dedication, and hard work can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers. A firm believer in mentorship and community support, Marvin has made it his mission to equip young people with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed both on and off the field. Through his initiative,?Every Rep Counts Network, he provides a robust network that offers valuable guidance on youth sports, athletic administration, and personal development. This network connects athletes with expert advice, career insights, and tangible tools to help them realize their fullest potential, whether they are striving to go pro or pursuing a career in sports management, coaching, or other athletic-related fields. Marvin’s work is grounded in the belief that diversity in athletics—and in life—creates a rich, vibrant tapestry. As Maya Angelou so eloquently stated, “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value.” Marvin strives to embody this message in everything he does, ensuring that every athlete, no matter their background or experience, understands their inherent value and has the resources to thrive. His commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive athletic community is helping shape the next generation of leaders, athletes, and professionals, all while reminding them that their worth is not defined by a single thread but by the entirety of their unique journeys.

Dr. Amber M. Sessoms, NCSP's journey is deeply rooted in her experience as a Black girl growing up in a predominantly white town, where she faced abandonment and the emotional turmoil of being marginalized and made to feel like an outsider. From a young age, these formative experiences of isolation and being "othered" ignited a fierce determination to understand and address the complexities of identity, belonging, and systemic inequality. These challenges shaped her values and the course of her life, leading her to pursue a career in school psychology and adult education. Throughout her professional journey, Dr. Amber has remained committed to amplifying the voices of those who feel silenced or oppressed. She has dedicated herself to creating spaces where individuals and teams can explore their own truths, moving toward self-awareness, empathy, and collective growth. By fostering an environment of mindful inquiry, she helps others recognize and confront the underlying forces that shape their behaviors and beliefs, encouraging transformation both personally and professionally. At the heart of Dr. Amber’s work is the 3D Power Tools Framework, a powerful model she developed to help individuals and organizations unlock their potential. This framework goes beyond traditional approaches by addressing hidden or suppressed issues, guiding people toward deeper understanding and authentic connections. It provides the tools to navigate the complexities of human interactions, promoting dignity, respect, and inclusion in all spaces. Dr. Amber is steadfast in her commitment to the work of liberation—both personal and societal. She recognizes the power of community in creating lasting change and invites others to join her on this transformative journey.
