We often see the complaints of BDR’s and sales folks who do cold calling wrong. I’m going to do something a little different. Shoutout to Noah Kaye at Attention for killing the cold call game. Noah hit me on my cell phone a couple months back, his cold call was great. Who I am Why I’m calling What we do What I want The timing wasn’t good at the time and I told him to call me back in a couple months. Noah called from the same number, a couple months later and reminded me of our first call. I immediately remembered him. I wasn’t familiar with the brand but asked if they were using Dimmo ?? so I could quickly take a look at a demo and see if there was symmetry in their offering and what I need. Noah checked and they were on Dimmo, he also offered to send a brief Loom outlining their product/service. I took a look, found immediate symmetry and booked a meeting. If you’re a BDR and you’re making dials. Be like Noah. Sometimes the timing isn’t right. That’s okay. Sometimes the prospect wants to see if there is symmetry before booking a meeting. That’s okay. Have the tools you need at the ready to get that meeting booked. Thanks Noah for the call! Looking forward to our meeting later this week.

We're seeing >8% positive reply rate on a fully automated campaign using 'recently hired an individual contributor as a signal. The trick: call out the IC's name in your email and infer an initiative/problem this might indicate. eg. Subject line ‘how’s Jake ramping?' Here's the breakdown of how to build this: 1?? SalesNav: filter for new hires in your ICP (<1yr at current company role + changed jobs) 2?? PhantomBuster: SalesNav Search export (run 1X daily) 3?? Clay: 1. PhantomBuster API call 2. Enrich company 3. People search (include all relevant titles who the IC reports to*) 4. push to new table 5. waterfall email enrichment 6. lookup IC name from first table 7. push to Instantly (add ICs name as custom variable in settings) 4?? Instantly: sequence leads Clone this across all target personas and automatically sequence 100s of relevant leads each week. Let me know if you want the clay template and I’ll send it over.

Cold outbound is hard, but don’t make it harder than it needs to be. For me, personalization boils down to one thing: relevance. I don’t care if you mention Malik Nabers being an absolute baller in fantasy (12/182/2 loading in his comeback), but at the end of the day, that isn’t helping my team close more deals, so it’ll probably be crickets. Here’s what my team is doing to ensure we stay relevant as a startup. First, twice a week, we do multi-hour cold-calling blocks. What we used to do was call anyone with a sales title, but that has changed. Relevance starts with being personalized to the industry and persona that you are reaching out to. If you’re giving a broad pitch, you’ve already dug yourself into a hole. Instead, bucket your outreach to specific people in specific industries, learn from your v1 messaging, and iterate your talk tracks going forward. Each bucket should have fundamentally different messaging that will resonate specifically with the person you are reaching out to. Over time, you will learn what persona X in industry Y in each bucket really cares about. This will not only increase your conversion rate but also scale your outreach to engage with more people. Higher conversion, more conversations—everyone is happy. Now, our cold-calling blocks are concentrated on one persona in one industry. Our speed of learning about their specific challenges has exponentially accelerated. We now have a more intimate understanding of our ICP, and WAY more meetings on the calendar. What are other people doing to optimize their outbound efforts?

Over the last year, we've seen AI deliver some clever "slingshots" or wedges into vertical SaaS - the key thing to becoming David with his magical slingshot and effectively taking down the existing Goliaths, will be building a system of record and the workflows around it. The "slingshots" we're typically seeing look like: 1) Voice - e.g. assisting in screening inbound and generating outbound calling 2) Transcription - e.g. helping record notes 3) Workflow automation -?e.g. filling out forms and reports, document processing 4) Lead generation - e.g. creating emails and other messages, marketing campaign content All of these are simple, add- on tools - easy to adopt by a business, familiar work with minimal onboarding/training needed. And often 100% accuracy isn't always required (or can be checked). They are magical to their customers as they assist or even replace human labor. We're seeing these AI companies grow quickly - it's like magic to their customers and everyone wants to try AI! These slingshots are vertical-specific - trained on vertical data (e.g. legal precedent, accounting rules) and/or customized workflows and integrations (e.g. into the TMS or EHR ecosystem). Their customers don't have the resources to take horizontal AI tools to build and maintain custom software. We've seen a number of startups begin with a horizontal approach across industries, end up verticalizing here. But they can have a big, positive impact on their customers' P&L especially for: 1) an SMB where the labor cost would have been and felt directly by the owner (e.g. a doctor's office) 2) industries where there are lots of people employed or BPOs used (e.g. freight brokerage, insurance claims processing). So what does it take for these slingshots to be well-aimed and turn into defensible "operating systems"? They are coming up against ingrained Goliath systems with broad feature sets. That said, they are collecting *ground truth data* on the business. This is the underlying data on customers, their interactions and preferences, performance of the business - the data that employees often used to manually key into an ERP or CRM, then extract to understand the business. It’s all automatically available, in real-time ideally! With the right workflows from there, the AI wedge + the data enable these new companies to compete.

3 decisions that led me to where I am today. A few weeks ago I had a great chat with Anis Bennaceur from Attention. One of the best questions he asked me was ?? What are the three pivotal moments in your career that got you to where you are today?” 1?? Moving to Berlin Coming from Belgium, where opportunities in tech are quite limited, I knew I needed to make a move to grow in the industry. In Europe, if you want to make it big in tech, you typically choose between Berlin, Paris, or London. I chose Berlin and it immersed me in a bunch of hyper-growth startups. Working there taught me a ton. Seeing from the inside how great companies are managed taught me a lot and this has a massive impact on how we do things at ColdIQ. 2?? A life-changing pep talk from a friend turned business partner Mich and I had been friends for a long time (10+ years now). One day, during one of our chats, I was venting about how unfulfilled I felt in my job. He looked at me and said something that shook me: “You’re the only person I know who could compete with me in business, but that’ll never happen if you keep being an employee. Our 20s are the decade where we need to make magic happen.” That conversation lit a ?? in me. It made me promise myself to never work for someone else again. After multiple discussions, we decided to join forces. I teamed up with Mich, and the rest is history. 3?? Choosing to make it big When I joined Michel, we both wanted the freedom that entrepreneurship offers. At some point, we had to take a big decision: ?? Do we want a business that supports our lifestyle? OR ?? Do we want to build a real company? While living the digital nomad life in Bali was great, we realized we wanted to aim higher. We decided to go all in and commit to building the biggest business we could. It’s sometimes difficult to asses how much a decision can impact your life in the long term. It really resonates with the quote from Steve Jobs “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Curious to hear what are key moments that led you were you are today?

    BDR @ Attention

Lessons learned from a campaign that Jake and I wrote that generated 44 responses and 9 meetings (on the first email). 1. Brevity is key. The copy was sub 50 words. The goal is to spark interest, not explain everything we do in an email. 2. Relevance is king. The campaign was targeted at people who attended a summit at which Jacob spoke. This of course presented a unique opportunity that is hard to scale, but relevance > personalization every single time. 3. Always follow up. We’ve generated a couple more meetings just from a quick follow-up, providing additional context and value. 4. Having a low friction CTA: "Worth discussing further?” No pressure for a call, or to nail down a specific time. Everyone knows we want a call on the books, but that first bite is by far the hardest to achieve - make it as easy as possible. As noted, this campaign is unfortunately hard to scale given it was based on a specific event, where people (may) have received context about Attention. These best practices apply to any email, however.
