  • In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a decline in overall maternal deaths but an increase in the mortality gap for women of color, with Black women dying during pregnancy and childbirth at nearly 3.5 times the rate of white women. The fact that disparities based on race and ethnicity surged as the pandemic subsided underscores the fact that persistent healthcare gaps, driven by structural racism and longstanding systemic barriers preventing equal access to healthcare, perpetuate poor health outcomes among Black mothers. While expanding Medicaid postpartum care coverage to 12 months was a positive step, it is not enough. We must continue advocating for policies, like investing in community-based support systems that prioritize easily available, culturally competent maternal healthcare to protect the health and lives of all mothers. Individual policies may lead to modest maternal health improvements, but we cannot ignore the fundamental failure of racial and ethnic disparities in our healthcare system. We need to eliminate bias in healthcare and ensure that all women — regardless of race, ethnicity, or income — have equal access to comprehensive maternal healthcare. We’ve attached the 2024 March of Dimes Report Card to share where the work must begin and how we need to do more for pregnant people.
