Dr. Sylvia Washington, a pediatrician at Atrium Health Floyd, explains that her dedication to her career is driven by her love for helping kids and their families. "I love children, and I love to see them well and thriving," she shares. "I'll do whatever it takes to ensure that happens." The desire to make an impact in the lives of others runs in the family. Dr. Washington’s passion for health care is inspired by her mother, who was an ICU nurse and her sister, who is a nurse practitioner for Atrium Health. Reflecting on one of the biggest challenges she has faced during her career, Dr. Washington sites the 2020 global health crisis as an obstacle that not only shaped her as a leader but strengthened her team’s resilience. "We became a team—whether you were cleaning a room, triaging a patient, or taking care of a child, we were all in it together." Dr. Washington experienced growth as she was faced with leading critical decisions about patient care during this unprecedented time. To celebrate her team’s hard work overcoming the challenges they faced, Dr. Washington and her team enjoyed a well-deserved trip to Disney World. “It was like we won the Super Bowl,” she shares. In addition to her work in patient care, Dr. Washington strives to create a positive impact on the next generation of pediatricians—serving as a mentor for medical students, residents, and even high school students aspiring to enter the field. She is also on the executive board of the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and served on the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) in 2024, among several other accomplishments. For the second straight year Atrium Health Floyd will again host an EMS Trauma Summit at The Forum River Center. This year's event is scheduled for Feb. 19, bringing EMS members from across the state. A trauma skills procedure lab will be held on Feb. 18. Congratulations to 18 nurse residents at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center who recently completed the 6-month nurse residency program. The residents are nursing school graduates with less than 6 months experience. They participated in ancillary and clinical immersions throughout the hospital and took classes focusing on: ? Work/life balance ? Critical thinking skills ? Conflict resolution ? Effective communication strategies ? Professional development Each participant also followed a Professional Development Pathway that enhances professional growth in the clinical setting.
