We help our partners imagine and create effective digital products for learners, readers, and teachers.

关于我们

Our mission is to build the highest quality and most effective digital products for reading, teaching, and learning. Atomic is a NYC-based software engineering services company. We help our partners imagine and build digital products for learners, readers, and teachers. We start from content, we focus on users, and we engineer for quality. Our clients include Penguin Random House, Scholastic, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Amplify Learning, as well as nonprofit clients such as AERDF, EL Education, and Alcoholics Anonymous. Full Stack Engineering for Content: We build products that connect our clients' content to readers, students, and teachers with a digital-first CMS, our print-to-digital engine, and consulting expertise in metadata taxonomies, automated workflow, and tools for distributed editorial teams. Digital Reading: We create new ways to discover books, read books, and share books. We build data services using AWS and we build user-facing applications with Angular and React. Digital Learning: We help our clients make a difference with digital tools for K-12 teachers and students, in the classroom and at home. Our engineering team understands the challenges in ed-tech and we’re ready to help.

How do you take print content beyond PDFs and ePubs, all the way to interactive, web-based applications? How do you turn your content into new ways to learn across multiple platforms? How do you get everyone from content to engineering to work together? The answer is “content engineering,” and at Atomic, it is one way we help educational publishers innovate. We took a minute recently to write up what content engineering means to us at Atomic. We took a deep dive into Atomic’s content engineering world, and how our team blends technology and creativity to transform complex content into structured, reusable, and interactive digital assets. Check out the full blog post to learn how we innovate for content creation and delivery. ???https://lnkd.in/e7Q4JESz

    President, Atomic Software, Inc.

Megan Artin, Sean Oakes, Louisa Rosenheck, and I have proposed a panel for #SXSWEDU 2025 on how to leverage everything and everyone you can at your organization to build for *all* your learners. I think it’s going to be amazing, and we’re asking for your vote! We are planning a practical, tactical discussion of turning your inclusive idea into an effective product with an organization’s existing tools. We will draw on real-world examples of inclusive development processes, accessibility as a business advantage, and strategies for working with the advantages (and disadvantages!) of the grooves of corporate processes. This unique team of panelists has guided many big ideas from research to classrooms, each from our own view of product ownership, UX, design, and engineering. I'm excited to be a part of it, and with your help, in Austin we’ll bring all those perspectives together! Please give us a vote before voting ends on 8/18 (https://lnkd.in/eK53UxNB) -- thank you!

You can't make a great product without a stellar team behind you. Here's a closer look at the partners who made invaluable contributions to Starwriter, a digital handwriting and instruction app for young learners recognized by The Webby Awards. This app is based on the research of Dr. Nell K. Duke, who developed a brilliant system that teaches students to write letters with more legibility, efficiency, and automaticity. Starwriter models each letter, guides the child through the strokes, and provides feedback to help the child improve. From a product standpoint, we were guided by Tracy Mistry, an occupational therapist. Tracy deeply understood how young learners would react to different elements of Starwriter's interface. She also provided great insight into the tactical skills of young children, including how they hold a pencil or stylus. In order to design and build Starwriter, we also needed a tight relationship with our development partners at Atomic NYC, who were instrumental in our overall design process and helped to ensure that Nell's instruction was effectively translated into a digital product. Here's what our partners have to say about the project in their own words: Dr. Nell K. Duke, University of Michigan, Great First Eight "Backpack Interactive is amazing to work with! They have a multidimensional team with expertise in graphic design, user experience, classroom context, child development, and the affordances of specific technologies. They listen to vision and feedback and liaise effectively with developers. We are so appreciative of Backpack’s role in our work!" Tracy Mistry, Occupational Therapist "Working with Backpack Interactive on the Starwriter app has been a fantastic experience. They brought creativity, organization and a consistently positive attitude to the team as they captured our vision for Starwriter in engaging, education-focused designs. Adam Young, Atomic NYC From day one on the Starwriter project, we worked together as an incredible, multi-talented team: Dr. Nell Duke was clear about the goals for learners, Backpack translated that into an effective digital experience, and Atomic prototyped options for how to achieve it. Starting from a greenfield of options, the combined team set priorities, iterated quickly, tested hypotheses, and proved out technical solutions to deliver for users. Together, we delivered an amazing MVP to NYC classrooms in 3 months and then continued to grow and evolve over the school year." Congratulations to Magpie Literacy, Dr. Duke, Tracy, and Atomic for their incredible work! We couldn't ask for better partners than you.
