I've been following the TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in the world since I was 13 years old (don't ask me how long ago that was). Never in my wildest childhood dreams could I imagine I would be working with one of these incredible systems. Yet here we are. On #1 - Frontier at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I will never get used to running `ssh frontier` on my laptop and having access to this incredible system and all of its capabilities. As icing on the cake we're able to put our work (and Frontier) towards addressing one of the biggest challenges of our time - our ever increasing appetite for energy in the face of the disastrous effects of climate change. Supercomputers exist to help solve the biggest challenges humanity faces. We're in the right place. Just this week I met someone from Porto Alegre, Brazil - an area that has been ravaged by unprecedented flooding due to climate change. Hearing him describe what his family and friends are going through was heartbreaking to say the least. I'm incredibly happy and fortunate to be putting our work at Atomic Canyon towards making a difference for all of us and people like Rafael and his friends and family. Special thanks to Thomas Evans who has been instrumental in supporting us on this journey. It's hard to believe Atomic Canyon is six months old. We're just getting started.
This has been an exciting week for AI. OpenAI has announced GPT-4o and Google I/O 2024 was filled with AI applications. The pace of innovation of AI is like nothing we have ever seen before. If you have NOT seen videos of GPT-4o or Google’s generative AI applications, I highly recommend you take a moment to observe the technology that has just been released. If either of these technologies were released 5 years ago, it would be front page of every news outlet. There is so much happening in AI, we are already becoming desensitized to the unbelievably rapid improvement of the technology. AI is going to transform so many elements of our lives. Education, healthcare- and almost every facet of our world will look different in the next 10 years. However, there is a looming problem over the next 2-3 year horizon… this incredible AI technology we have built consumes a tremendous amount of energy. We are still in the first inning of the AI revolution – and the power grid is already being taxed. There is discussion of large tech companies building datacenter that will require multiple GIGAWATTS of power. For those of you not in the energy industry (that’s right, I get to claim being in energy after 5 months ?? ), multiple gigawatts of power is the equivalent of a LARGE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT plugged straight into a datacenter. The bottleneck of AI advancement today is access to Nvidia GPUs. The bottleneck of AI advancement within 2 years will be access to power. Every big tech company will be an energy company within the next 2 years. As we look to unlock clean, safe, and reliable energy for datacenters and other purposes (EVs / US manufacturing ???? ) – the absolute best option to energize these sectors is nuclear power. In order to make construction and operation of nuclear power as cost-effective as possible, we must leverage artificial intelligence as a tool to drive efficiencies throughout the entire nuclear power supply chain. Today, we at Atomic Canyon, have announced our project with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to leverage the world’s fastest supercomputer to train safe and reliable open-source models for the nuclear power industry. This advanced AI capability combined with our previous Neutron Search Platform enables us to further provide the nuclear power industry with safe and reliable applications to help streamline regulatory processes. A huge thank you the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other entities that have formally or informally supported us through these endeavors. We are less than 5 months into the journey of Atomic Canyon and I could not be prouder of the work that has been accomplished by our small, but mighty team of AI practitioners! https://lnkd.in/e-Y8Qwfx
