It was great to spend the last two days in Boston for The Engine Accelerator Tough Tech Summit and to see so many fellow MIT founders, operators, and old friends. And, given a 4 hr flight home to Colorado, I have some thoughts and reflections! 1. The diversity of fellow Engine Ventures portfolio companies is inspiring, from drug discovery companies to fusion to a boiler company like AtmosZero, few funds are doing it like EV. Their thesis and focus on developing tough tech founders has filled a previously overlooked need in the market. Some of the smartest money in the game. Glad that we have joined this family of companies. 2. There were a TON of other investors at the event trying to get into Boston-based deals, missing the forest through the trees. Boston is a great ecosystem and home to some incredible companies but it’s becoming an incredibly expensive market to scale a hardware company. Again it is EV who, through investments in companies like us, has recognized that there are tough tech ecosystems across the country, like Northern Colorado, where we have found all the ingredients to scale from the lab to gigafactory within 30 miles, making innovation and scaling happen quickly and in a very capital efficient way. 3. It has been great to work with—and learn from—Ricardo Schneider through our partnership between AtmosZero and Danfoss Turbocor. He is an incredibly thoughtful and entrepreneurial leader who has made Turbocor into the true sector leader. I’m glad that he will be staying on to support Danfoss broadly. Basically, it works everywhere where there are three things: ?? air ?? pipes ?? electricity Boiler 2.0 works by drawing in ambient air to heat liquid glycol, which powers a series of compression cycles that raise the temperature and pressure of refrigerants to boil water. You can drop our heat pump into a central steam plant and/or individual buildings for an easy to deploy high-efficiency, zero on-site emissions replacement of your traditional boiler. Earlier this month Forbes highlighted our partnership with New Belgium Brewing to help decarbonize their steam production and take a major step towards carbon neutrality! ?? By installing our innovative heat pump technology at their Ft. Collins brewery, New Belgium is aiming to reduce emissions from one of the biggest industrial sources—steam production. Our Boiler 2.0 technology could help the brewery cut 30%-40% of its steam emissions! “We aim to get up to gigawatt scale by the end of this decade—a move that will save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars,” said CEO and Founder Addison Stark. Congratulations to Addison Stark, CEO, AtmosZero, for being named to ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Mechanical Engineering magazine 2024 Watchlist! Innovation is the driving force of engineering. And innovators—the bold thinkers, the relentless problem solvers, and the daring dreamers—are the ones who lead the way to solving today’s challenges. With this sentiment in mind, Addison is one of 25 early career engineers who have already left their marks on industry, academia, and society. Stark’s company, AtmosZero, is building a new technology to electrify and decarbonize the boiler room at a time when large-scale investments are going into climate hardware. “We have a real chance to rebuild the world around us,” Stark said. Steam accounts for 8 percent of global emissions, and he believes now is the perfect time to address that by rethinking the boiler. “Babcock and Wilcox were the last major innovation to the boiler in 1867,” he said. “The time is right.
