Bringing internet access to disaster-prone communities is making a real difference! With better connectivity, people are more prepared for emergencies and have new economic opportunities.

What if social networks were more like ?? going to the gym than ?? smoking a pack of cigarettes? The effects of mass social media platforms like Facebook have been studied and documented, including the risk of increased anxiety, depression, and potential addiction. This is by design - your continued attention, by any means necessary, is profitable. It doesn't have to be this way. In December of last year, I joined the board of Atma Connect because I believe in their vision of a better-connected world. Find out how the team collaborated with the Internet Society Foundation and Indonesia’s Red Cross to partner with local people to: ?? Install community-owned internet in remote villages ?? Install solar power? ?? Train disaster response teams—composed of local residents When disaster hit, roads were destroyed, and aid was cut off, people could act. Lives were saved. This is just one example of what can actually happen when we combine the power of networks and community with purpose. On 4 December 2024, Sukabumi Regency in Indonesia was struck by a series of devastating natural disasters, including floods, land movements, landslides, and strong winds. The disasters claimed the lives of 12 people, with many others displaced from their homes. Amid the chaos, members of the Community-Based Disaster Preparedness (SiBAT) teams in Suradita village Ciengang subdistrict , and Sukamaju villages nyalindung subdistrict stepped up, working together to assist affected residents. Their response included evacuation efforts, disaster mitigation, and the rapid dissemination of crucial information, made possible by their training in disaster-based internet usage. This community-led initiative is part of a program spearheaded by Atma Connect and PMI Sukabumi with funding and support from the Internet Society Foundation . The program provided comprehensive technical training, including internet-based disaster management, which proved instrumental in coordinating relief efforts. One SiBAT member stated, "The training we received allowed us to act quickly and effectively during this disaster. Without it, our response would have been far less organized." The program highlights the power of empowering local communities with the skills and tools necessary for disaster response. Our Women's Entrepreneurship project funded by Internet Society Foundation is helping 240 women entrepreneurs expand their digital skills, and as their small businesses come online, on Google maps, use digital marketing, etc. - their incomes are growing! An amazing 91 % of women in just 9 months reported an increase in business profit, sales, and online marketing. ?? Wow. Impressed by the significant transformation that was made possible with this investment. These are the women who are shining the light on the path forward. Let's follow.

???? I'm thrilled to share some news: I've been searching for a non-profit board seat, and I've found the perfect fit. But first, some background: I was one of the early Internet adopters who believed that a connected world was a better world. Instead, our digital experiences are currently dominated by engagement algorithms that feed on outrage and interfaces designed to extract attention and data. I've been struggling with this for years: can we find alternatives to mass social media that bring out our collective best (vs. our collective worst?) ?? Which is why I'm thrilled to share some hopeful news: I'm joining the board of Atma Connect, a nonprofit proving that a different kind of social technology isn't just possible—it's already working. Atma Connect focuses on leveraging social technologies for social good. An example is AtmaGo, a hyperlocal platform where neighbors solve problems, share resources, and create collective resilience. It's social media stripped down to its most vital promise: helping people help each other. The stories emerging from communities using AtmaGo paint a powerful picture: neighbors connecting during natural disasters, grassroots leaders emerging to tackle local challenges, and villages transforming their collective future through shared knowledge and action. This isn't just information-sharing—it's community power being born in real-time. This is what happens when we design for collaboration instead of consumption. And this is what happens when we take action to attempt to build better communities instead of just writing or talking about it (I call this "admiring the problem".) I'm honored to join Atma Connect's brilliant team, including Meena Palaniappan, in scaling this vision.
