Our WRITE project tackles a widespread problem in Alaska and across the United States: Many high school teachers, especially those in career and technical education, lack the formal training to effectively teach argumentative writing. The project started as a way to improve Alaska Native students' writing skills and better prepare them for success after high school. Now, as the development of WRITE resources draws to a close, the tools and strategies created through the project will become a part of a digital collection of learning resources for?all?schools, districts and leadership agencies across the state. Jake Thompson received a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to further develop measr! The tool bridges the gap between complex statistical models used in student assessment and their applications in the classroom. With this funding, Jake will enhance functionality, expand capabilities, and provide workshops and resources to promote the use of data-driven insights to improve student learning. #education #assessment #psychometrics #research https://lnkd.in/dGnczKSr

“Researchers can leverage DCMs with measr?to help uncover more precise and actionable data for educators,” Jake Thompson said, “ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes for students.”
By building a software package based on the music of Taylor Swift, researcher Jake Thompson laid the groundwork for a free tool that makes diagnostic classification models easier to use for student assessments.

We (Marjorie Wine and I) do not get into it in this commentary, but content development work for large scale assessment requires a lot more than just content expertise. Content experts are important, but the work of developing test content within the processes of assessment development requires an array of other skills and knowledge, too. https://lnkd.in/evDcjmQG
In recent commentary in EM:IP, Wine and Hoffman discuss whether “educational measurement” is broader than just psychometrics. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ggQdsyn2 #FoundationalCompetencies

Dual sensory loss (DSL) too often goes undetected in students with extensive support needs (ESN). ? ATLAS, the National Center on Deafblindness (NCDB), and the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies (CLDS) combined their data and expertise to bring awareness to the early signs of DSL in students with ESN. ? These findings are part of a larger project to create materials and methods that improve access to the general education curriculum for students with DSL and ESN. #Accessibility #Deafblindness #SpecialEducation https://lnkd.in/g8JFnEr6 National Center on Deafblindness: nationaldb.org Accessible Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Systems: atlas.ku.edu Center for Literacy and Disability Studies: https://lnkd.in/gvFt5Xim

We're excited to welcome Hyunjoo Kim as our 2024 fellow! She will research the use of a novel approach to map student understanding. The approach uses graph theory to show how different skills and concepts connect and influence each other. This information can help inform instructional decisions. “I believe the findings of this research could significantly contribute to education research and support more realistic and flexible assessments,” Kim said. https://lnkd.in/dkqdV3cG

Today's new article in PARE puts validity of inferences at the forefront of the conversation. In "Response Process Evidence for Academic Assessments of Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities" by Meagan Karvonen, Russell Swinburne Romine, and Amy Clark (at The University of Kansas / Accessible Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Systems (ATLAS)), a few important aims are realized. Here, learners are centered in the test design choices made to support them and the eliciting their skills, and that is a driver of this research. A significant research contribution here is in creating protocols for gathering the evidence that links key design choices and actionable information. This article is likewise noteworthy in demonstrating how to build the evidentiary argument in a clear and explicit way to support use of this computer-based alternate assessment program. #responseprocesses #alternateassessment #validity https://lnkd.in/ew8SmCqX
