?? Quick Tips: NIST’s New Password Guidelines As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we would like to share some important updates from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST has recently updated its password guidelines, and the focus is on making security easier while also improving protection. Here’s what you need to know: ?? Go for Length, Not Complexity: The days of forcing a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters are behind us. Instead, NIST recommends longer passwords. Think 8 characters as a minimum, but the longer, the better—up to 64 characters if you can! ?? Don’t Change Passwords Unless Necessary: Constantly changing passwords can actually weaken security. NIST advises that password changes should only happen when there’s a clear sign of compromise. ?? Avoid Weak Passwords: Companies are encouraged to block passwords that are commonly used or have been compromised before. This means no more “password123” or anything easily guessable. ?? No More Password Hints or Security Questions: These are easy targets for hackers. NIST recommends steering clear of hints and those "What’s your mother’s maiden name?" questions. ?? Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Whenever possible, add that extra layer of security with MFA. It’s one of the best ways to protect yourself if a password gets stolen. These new guidelines are designed to make password management simpler and more effective. Whether you’re a business or an individual, it's important to stay informed and adapt to the latest recommendations.
