It's that time of year again! After the success of last year's inaugural Build Detroit: Skilled Trades Challenge, we have been hard at work planning a bigger and better event for its upcoming return on May 8th. We have moved over to Shed 3 for more competition space, made plans to incorporate more trades at the event, and partnered with even more industry leaders and unions to make the event an even bigger success this time around. 2024 has been a wonderful year of growth and exciting new endeavors. We are incredibly thankful for all of the support we receive, and grateful to all of those who helped to make the year our biggest yet. Over the course of 2024, we hosted our inaugural ‘Build Detroit: Skilled Trades Challenge’ skilled trades competition at Eastern Market and have made plans for a bigger and better event this May; built a nature megaphone to channel the sounds of Belle Isle to the listener sitting inside, which will be placed on the island this coming spring; traveled to Barbados the twelfth time for our annual study abroad opportunity with the Our World students; hosted nearly 30 students over the summer with Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, where they learned about various skilled trades and completed community projects - including porch renovations and building the nature megaphone; and expanded Our World to offer programming in classrooms at high schools around the city of Detroit through the MiLEAP OST grant, allowing us to increase our reach by up to 100 students each year, and received a second year of funding to help us continue to serve even more students. As we wrap up this year, we are looking back proudly on all that we have accomplished - but hope to make 2025 even better. This holiday season, Atlantic Impact is delighted to be taking part in The Detroit News Holiday Cheer for Charity! From November 8th to November 22nd, 11 community based non-profits will be competing against each other to gain the most votes in round 1 to move to round 2 and have the chance to win $20,000. You can vote for your favorite organization once per day, and the top five will move to round 2 starting December 4th. During the second round, each organization will compete to raise the most money - with each charity receiving the funds they have raised and the winner receiving the grand prize. Recently our students were approached by Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation’s, Life Trustee Jeffrey Littmann, as part of his Trustee Designated Program, to create a nature megaphone on Detroit’s very own Belle Isle! This megaphone, 10-feet in diameter & the third of its kind in Michigan, will be a permanent fixture at the Belle Isle Nature Center and funnel the calming sounds of nature in the park directly into the ear of those sitting inside of it. We are so proud of the work our students have put in building the megaphone, and we hope you are able to keep as much enjoyment out of it as we have building it! #Detroit #BelleIsle #SkilledTrades #Construction

We are so appreciative of Sachse Construction for its continued generosity and support of our organization. Sachse Social Mission recently hosted a cornhole tournament, and the proceeds were donated to Atlantic Impact. Sachse has be an on-going supporter. From volunteering at our events, to sharing construction related job opportunities with our students, and generous donations; Sachse shows up, and we are super grateful!

Yesterday, students from 10 high schools across Detroit gathered to compete in Atlantic Impact’s inaugural ‘Build Detroit: Skilled Trades Challenge' at Eastern Market. The competition was a huge success, and we would like to thank everyone who helped make the day great! The?Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union, Local 2 of Michigan coordinated and judged the masonry competition; Morrey's Contracting judged the carpentry competition; Sachse Construction sponsored prizes for the winners and recruited several volunteers, whom were an enormous help in facilitating a seamless event; Herc Rentals sponsored a much-needed forklift for the day; and 10 local businesses attended the business showcase to share their work and employment opportunities with over 100 local high school students, 'Build Detroit' competitors, and curious members of the community! Thinking about beginning a career in the trades, but not sure where to start? We are thrilled to announce Atlantic Impact's inaugural “Build Detroit: Youth Skilled Trades Challenge” at Eastern Market (Shed 5) on Thursday, May 9th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This challenge will showcase the talents and abilities of aspiring skilled tradesmen and women around Detroit, ages 16-24. Participants will be put to the test by completing a project tailored to their trade, and receive scores based on their level of completion/speed, technical proficiency, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. Visit the competition to learn more about various trades in commercial and residential construction, heavy equipment operation, manufacturing, and more, and even register for job training and apprenticeships if you are interested in what you see! Atlantic Impact program graduates are placed into jobs earning an average of $19/hr within three months of graduation, with ample room to grow to an average of $54,000/year. We are beyond excited to showcase the skills of our students, promote vocational education & training, and highlight the importance of skilled trades in the region's economy. Lunch will be provided.
