The EU-funded AtlantECO project aims to develop and apply a novel, unifying framework that provides knowledge-based resources for a better understanding and management of the Atlantic Ocean and its ecosystem services. AtlantECO engages with citizens and actors from the industry and policy sectors in order to stimulate responsible behaviour and Blue Growth. The project focuses on three pillars of research: microbiomes, plastic and the plastisphere, and seascape connectivity. In pursuit of this goal, AtlantECO is bringing together experts and pioneers from Europe, South America and South Africa with the relevant resources, knowledge and experience.

?? New scientific paper ! “What other secrets do these tiny predators hold?? How do they truly affect marine ecosystems? The story of Picozoa is far from over, and each new discovery opens the door to more questions about life in the ocean’s smallest corners. “ ?? Paula Huber ?? Picozoa are small, enigmatic eukaryotic microorganisms found in marine environments, where they play a crucial role as predators of other microorganisms.? This research underscores their ecological significance and evolutionary complexity, revealing that species exhibit distinct distribution patterns influenced by latitude, and that closely related Picozoa do not always occupy similar ecological niches. This challenges traditional views on species evolution and adaptation. ?? Read the article : https://lnkd.in/dSaUvDbX Credits to ?? ???? The Atlantic Ocean plays a pivotal role in regulating the Earth’s climate, yet it is taking blows from harmful human activities. Dr. Emma Rocke from the?AtlantECO Project?is just one of the EU-funded research heroes building resilience in the face of these challenges. Her research aims to improve policies on shelf mining activities in Namibia and South Africa for a better environmental regulation of coastal areas affected by #ClimateChange ?? ?? For the past five years, #HorizonEU has been supporting AtlantECO’s impactful work in this region. With #COP29 still ongoing, we're shining a spotlight on EU-funded projects that are helping vulnerable communities and drawing a blueprint for resilience:?https://europa.eu/!8fQKYv #EUatCOP29 #ActNow #VulnerableRegions?#GreenerTogether Video produced by AtlantECO Project, with additional footage provided by the University of Cape Town UCT TV Studio. ??? Episode 52 - Artificial intelligence in oceanography ??? Meet Bruno Buongiorno Nardelli, researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Ph.D. Marine Science, Laurea in Physics. Bruno's research focuses on understanding how various oceanic variables contribute to climate change and the behavior of marine ecosystems. He has developed techniques utilising statistical analysis, physical models, and artificial intelligence to interpret observations and improve our knowledge of the earth’s systems. Within the AtlantECO project, Bruno's efforts are directed towards analysing data to understand phytoplankton abundance through ocean color satellite data and separating natural oceanic oscillations from those induced by anthropogenic activities. Such work is vital not just for determining the ocean’s current state but also for predicting future impacts on marine ecosystems and validating climatic models. ?? ?? Summer throwback! ?? ? ?? The sustainable management & long-term preservation of our marine ecosystems require multidisciplinary collaboration ? ?? AtlantECO Project, BIOcean5D & Mission Atlantic thus came together to organise the Synergy Summer School, with support from the Marine Training Unit of EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre hosted at Universiteit Gent ? ?? Held in June 2024 in Ischia (Italy), the Synergy Summer School provided advanced training in multiple fields of ocean science, bridging the interfaces between disciplines and ensuring the next cohort of scientists are equipped with the strong cross-disciplinary expertise needed to form an integrated understanding of marine ecosystems ? ?? We caught up with 3 of the organisers to learn more! - Damien Eveillard, BIOcean5D work leader & professor at Nantes Université - Daniele Iudicone, AtlantECO Project coordinator & researcher at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn - Patrizio Mariani, Mission Atlantic coordinator & professor at the DTU - Technical University of Denmark ? ??
