ALERT | AB 1575 Adds Section 66283 to the Education Code Regarding Public Postsecondary Education Student Advisers for Disciplinary Actions | 11.18.2024 On September 28, 2024, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill (“AB”) 1575 into law, adding Section 66283 to the Education Code. Effective January 1, 2025, known as “Katie Meyer’s Law,” AB 1575 requires public California colleges and universities to adopt a policy that allows a student who is subject to a disciplinary action to be assisted by an adviser of their choice.?AB 1575 was initiated to ensure advisers are available to students who face any type of disciplinary procedure on campus. ALERT | SB 1137 Expands California’s Civil Rights Laws Prohibiting Discrimination Based on “Any Combination Of” Protected Characteristics, A.K.A. “Intersectionality” | 11.18.2024 On September 27, 2024, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill (“SB”) 1137 which amends Civil?Code section 51, Education Code sections 200 and 210.2, and Government Code sections 12920 and 12926, relating to discrimination. Business Law Journal | FinCEN Announces Limited Extensions to Corporate Transparency Act Reporting Deadlines | 11.13.2024 On October 29, 2024, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”) announced it was granting limited extensions for certain business entities with respect to the beneficial ownership reporting requirements as required under the Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”). Notably, the limited nature of this relief appears to indicate that there will be no broad extension granted to the current January 1, 2025 deadline by which time Reporting Companies formed prior to January 1, 2024 must file their BOI Report. This article provides a background to the CTA reporting requirements and breaks down which business entities may take advantage of the extension.
