I recently had a conversation with a peer regarding my experience managing strategic programs and projects for a Private Equity-Funded Company. Having worked for both public and privately owned companies, I can attest that managing strategic projects differs between these environments. I have over 7 years of experience working within private equity (PE)-funded companies, specifically in Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies, where I led PMOs and was embedded within business operations units. Managing a PMO, leading a team of PMs, or overseeing projects in a PE environment presents unique challenges but also offers significant opportunities for advancement and professional growth. As many of you know, Hurricane Helene (Category 4) recently devastated several Southern states last Thursday and Friday. The hurricane brought heavy rainfall, intense winds, damaging debris, and widespread flooding. ? Cities like Asheville, NC, were significantly impacted. I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Asheville a few years ago, specifically to see Biltmore. I was so impressed by the culture and the friendliness of the people. It breaks my heart to see the severe flooding across Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. ?? One quick tip if you want to break into a project management role. ?? Gain volunteer experience ? Start Somewhere: Find relevant and useful “project management” experience wherever you can. Look for volunteer opportunities that fold in project management skills that you can speak about for your resume and interview. Examples include organizing a community event, volunteering at a non-profit, etc. ? Stretch Your Capabilities: Once you have mastered the basic skills such as creating plans and working with various stakeholders within volunteer opportunities, look for larger opportunities where you can stretch your skills.
