Athena has a large team that manually grinds welds smooth, per our customer's requirements, to provide flat high-cosmetic surfaces with precision and accuracy. These expert technicians are a key piece of the puzzle in our sheet metal fab and welded frame workcenters. In addition to manually grinding welds, which is tricky and often backbreaking and burdensome work, we have automated weld grinding and some sheet metal surface finishing to handle greater volumes with precision and efficiency. Our industrial robotic weld grinding is one of Athena's crowning achievements and took years to develop. We embarked on a four-year R&D collaboration with 3M. and PushCorp and other partners to design and build this innovative and self-contained workcenter and even earned a front-page feature in the Wall Street Journal a few years ago! At Athena, we’ve learned through trial and error what works for our shop (and what doesn’t) and we’ve found that going all in on extreme changes isn’t effective. Instead, we’ve embraced a “2-Second Lean” approach that requires the people in our shop to make minor adjustments every single day to enhance productivity, reduce risk and eliminate waste.
