What comes to mind when you hear AI in healthcare? Is it Machine Learning (ML)? ChatGPT? Or the myriad Generative AI technologies that continue to expand the umbrella of AI far beyond its roots of the 1950s? Whether you know it or not, ML and AI have driven your experience as a patient, consumer, and user of technology for years before anyone heard the phrase “large language model” (LLM). Think about Netflix automatically serving up your next favorite show, or Google Photos allowing you to search for photos of rainbows. But today AI goes beyond surfacing insights and making predictions. LLMs like ChatGPT combine Generative AI with Natural Language Processing to understand the nuances and variations across the human language and generate a wide range of content. And while capabilities continue to expand exponentially, we are still only scratching the surface of AI’s massive potential – especially in healthcare. But – are those in healthcare actually using AI and LLMs to solve the industry’s most pressing issues? Or are they chasing the latest trends and bright shiny objects? We believe the power of AI isn’t measured in how quickly you deploy it – but in how intentionally you leverage it as a tool to create benefits for patients, providers, and the broader system.
