I recently stopped to take in Monet's beautiful, monumental Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe at Musée d'Orsay. Its unusual framing revealed an important lesson about art lending!! The story is fascinating: Unable to pay his rent, Monet offered his massive artwork as collateral for a loan. When the painting was returned to him, he discovered that poor storage conditions at the lender’s (his landlord) had so badly damaged the work that Monet had to cut it up to preserve the non-damaged parts.
