Since 9/11, Puppies Behind Bars has trained incarcerated individuals to raise puppies prepared to enter into explosive and acceleration detection training for ATF and other law enforcement agencies. These highly skilled dogs assist in securing major events, protecting public officials, and solving crimes across the U.S. by detecting explosives odors on discarded firearms and shell casings, as well as other explosives and accelerants. The year-long prison program prepares the pups for their careers through bonding, socialization, exercise, obedience training, and scent-based challenges. After testing, they are ready for specialized training with ATF where they are paired with a K-9 handler, becoming a lifelong member of their family while serving and protecting the public. Throughout the years, the organization has provided more than 400 super-sniffers to serve ATF and support the important work we do. These are some of the adorable pups from the Puppies Behind Bars program, who have or are destined to become ATF K-9 heroes. Learn more about ATF’s K-9s at https://lnkd.in/evrKEBBd. ATF’s laboratories started from humble beginnings with a two-scientist team in the attic of the U.S. Treasury building in 1886. Today, ATF laboratories provide accurate, authoritative scientific analysis of evidence in criminal investigations related to arson, explosives and firearms using the latest technology. The main hub of ATF’s scientific research is the National Laboratory Center in Maryland, which includes the Fire Research Laboratory, National Firearms Examiner Academy, and one of ATF’s two forensic science laboratories. The other forensic lab is in Atlanta. These laboratories are staffed with highly trained forensic chemists, forensic biologists, engineers, fingerprint specialists, firearm and toolmark examiners, document analysts and administrative personnel who work together to identify leads and help bring criminals to justice. ATF also offers competitive unpaid forensic science internships for students interested in law enforcement forensic careers. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eApjeQ7J. #WeAreATF
