We are excited to share that ARPA-E is supporting the development of our Measurement Reporting and Verification (MRV) system for marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR)! The funding will support the development of a high-accuracy, cost-effective and scalable MRV solution that integrates ocean monitoring and multiscale numerical ocean modeling. We are working on making continuous and real-time MRV possible, while resolving ocean processes from the global to the meter scale.?Reach out to learn more! https://lnkd.in/eD8dFrnj
关于我们
We are building the modeling, monitoring and data assimilation tools needed to create digital twins of human interventions in the ocean. We quantify ocean carbon processes and assess the performance, impacts and co-benefits of human interventions in the ocean in real time and continuously over the life of an operation. We unlock the potential of the marine CDR industry by turning low certainty carbon removal estimates into high certainty carbon removal credits.

We are excited to share that we have been contracted by?NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration?to further develop and expand the capabilities of OCM1,?our marine?CDR?Measurement?Reporting and?Verification (MRV)?system! Over the next three years, and as part of NASA's Carbon Monitoring program, we will develop, deploy and?validate?the first end-to-end?ocean?MRV system for?seagrass restoration and conservation projects. If you know of any exciting seagrass restoration projects, do not hesitate to reach out! We’re currently exploring potential deployment sites for OCM1 and would love to hear about any initiatives we could support. While seagrasses are often grouped with other Blue Carbon ecosystems like mangroves and salt marshes, they remove CO2 in a fundamentally different way. Unlike mangroves, which capture CO2 from the air,?seagrasses absorb CO2 from ocean water. Whether this leads to an effective reduction in atmospheric CO2 depends on ocean conditions, biogeochemical processes and complex air-sea gas exchanges. This complexity makes it essential to have an?MRV system tailored specifically to seagrass ecosystems?to accurately track and verify carbon removal for issuing carbon credits. We will go beyond just MRV and use OCM1 to assess the?co-benefits and impacts?of seagrass ecosystems, such as improving water quality, enhancing oxygen levels, balancing nutrient content, and promoting biodiversity. The video below is a proof-of-concept simulation of a seagrass restoration project run on OCM1.

atdepth MRV is developing an ocean modeling system that utilizes graphical processing units instead of traditional central processing units, which significantly improves modeling speeds and computational costs to provide real-time outputs with fine-scale ocean dynamics. Program Director Dr. Simon Freeman recently met with the SEA-CO2 project team in Cambridge, MA to learn more about their system’s measurement reporting and verification application for carbon capture. By reproducing the physics of marine carbon dioxide removal and continuously modeling ocean processes, the system would be able to provide high-certainty quantification of carbon drawdown from the global to the meter scale. #ARPAEontheRoad
