Today is World Prematurity Day, a day to recognize the tiniest warriors and their families. Premature babies account for 15million births a year. This population being born out of hospital, adds a greater challenge to pre-hospital management. Recently, after an uptick in prehospital 'micro-preemie' births (babies born before 26 weeks or under 1lb. ) , ATCEMS' Medical Directors focused on micro-preemies during our continuing education sessions. The content delivered by Dr. Heidi Abraham focused on pre-hospital management and resuscitation of this special population. Our Medical Directors awarded the following crew with the Clinical Excellence Award, after they were pivotal in resuscitating and stabilizing a 23 week gestation micro-preemie born out of hospital, as well as the patient's mother who was also experiencing complications. The citation reads as follows, "ATCEMS Medic 03- staffed by M. Ward and D. Dean-Masse as well as Paramedic Practitioner C. Brown were dispatched to reports of a patient in labor. When they arrived, they found that the mother was preparing to deliver and that no clear gestational age was known. When the infant was delivered, it was obvious that the young patient was extremely premature and in distress. The crew immediately called for additional help in caring for both patients. Medic 05- staffed by C. Castellanos and B. Duran- as well as DC03 M. Villasenor quickly responded. As a team, they were able to provide exceptional care for both the premature infant and the mother who was suffering complications from childbirth. Despite this extremely challenging situation, their outstanding treatment of both patients gave them each the best possible opportunity for a good outcome." Excellent work to these patient care teams! We are also happy to report that the patients are still progressing well.
