Hybrid Airships: A Leading Edge Traditional cigar-shaped airships rely mainly on lighter-than-air gas for lift, operating near ‘neutral buoyancy’. This makes them fuel-efficient but also imposes limitations: they are unstable in windy conditions, tricky to control on the ground and rely on mooring masts and large ground crews. Hybrid airships like our unique Z1 solve these problems, as seen in this video of its successful Lockheed Martin P-791 prototype. ? More than just helium – Unlike traditional airships, the Z1’s wide, tri-lobe lifting body shape generates significant aerodynamic lift, like an aeroplane wing. Combined with vectored thrust and the revolutionary Air Cushion Landing System, the Z1 operates at much greater heaviness on the ground making it more stable, more effective, cheaper and safer. ? More cargo, greater stability – Roughly 70% of the Z1’s lift comes from helium, while 30% comes from its tri-lobe shape, allowing heavier payloads and greater ground stability. Along with the ACLS, this eliminates the need for a large and expensive ground support operation and ensures the Z1 is resilient against wind while on the ground.
