IMPOSTOR SYNDROME DEEP DIVE PART 3: What can you do about it? Here are some practical strategies you can use to manage and eventually reduce impostor feelings: ?? FACTS VS FEELINGS: state the observable truths of the situation to separate the story you're telling yourself from what's really going on ?? ACKNOWLEDGE THEN LET GO: notice and validate the doubt or insecurity, then let it go with the belief that it's normal and doesn't have control over you ?? TALK IT OUT: Opening up to someone you trust can benefit both of you and vulnerability builds trust ?? REFRAME YOUR THOUGHTS: when you catch yourself spiraling, stop and consider what your best friend or mentor would say to you in this situation ?? ANTICIPATE AND PREPARE: reflect on when impostor feelings usually come and get ready for them ?? The Expert: ashamed when you can't immediately come up with the answer ?? The Soloist: compelled to do it on your own, as asking for help is "evidence" you aren't competent enough ?? The Natural Genius: nailing it effortlessly on the first try - or else ?? IMPOSTOR SYNDROME DEEP DIVE PART 1: What exactly is it? "Impostor syndrome" gets thrown around a lot, and is often used interchangeably with anxiety or low self-esteem. But, there's a difference: while it's normal to feel some anxiety or discomfort around starting a new project or giving a presentation, impostor syndrome takes on some unique characteristics that are still present even when you've proven your competence in a certain area. It includes: ?? The false belief that you've managed to "fool" people into getting your role ?? That your accomplishments are due to luck, timing or other external factors ?? It’s finally cooling off and the colors are changing. Take advantage of it: get outside for your next call or even for an in-person 1:1. Stepping away from our screens during the day is great for emotional and physical wellbeing, but we often forget that it’s an option WHILE we work.
