The world-class Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa, Arizona, which opened in fall 2022, hosts hundreds of students who will be making films, designing new virtual worlds and video games, and creating other immersive media experiences of all kinds. The MIX Center is part of the ASU at Mesa City Center complex, a collaboration between ASU and Mesa, Arizona, a city rich in history, art, community and industry. The MIX Center is located in the Salt River Valley on the ancestral homelands of those American Indian tribes that have inhabited this place for centuries, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) peoples, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today. Located in the heart of Mesa’s Innovation District, the site will serve as a laboratory for advanced media technologies and media production, a platform for game development and a driving force for entrepreneurial solutions. It will also be an open and inviting place for the public as well as a source of inspiration, entertainment and education. Here, a new generation of creators from Arizona and beyond will develop into the media and technology professionals we need in the 21st century.

At our most recent Spark Challenge, over 50 students from across Arizona State University got to be among the first to code and create on new video game making platform Endstar: https://lnkd.in/gyeFsbiK The Endstar Game Maker Spark Challenge spanned four days and concluded with a pitch competition that saw 13 student-led teams share their unique game ideas. Punit Shukal and Xingping Pan from Darkspawn Devils took home the top prize: “I never considered going into game making before this,” said Xingping. “[This Challenge] might have just changed my mind.” Endless Games and Learning Lab at ASU will start teaching with Endstar in March. ?? Grad Student Spotlight: Marisa Costagliola ?? Meet Marisa Costagliola, a graduate student in the Design (Experience Design), MSD program! As an XR designer, Marisa is passionate about creating immersive solutions that drive accessibility, healthcare innovation and user experience. ?? Marisa’s Focus Areas: ?? XR accessibility and user experience ?? Healthcare and sports innovation ?? Researching XR solutions for individuals with full paralysis Marisa’s groundbreaking work explores how EEG data and eye tracking can enhance quality of life for those with Locked-in Syndrome. This past fall, she participated in an accessibility panel, co-created a visual narrative experience in the EIS, and expanded her skill set with new software - all while leveraging the cutting-edge technology and collaborative environment at the MIX Center to bring her ideas to life.
