Appalachia can handle rain. It’s why we were attracted here. We know the rivers around Asheville to be ancient, well formed and stable. We welcome the rain, and don’t worry when we hear a storm is on the way. As kayakers, we internally rejoice and begin to plan which river we’ll run once the rains hit. This one hit different. Way different. The rain settled into an enchanting rhythm on Wednesday evening and was still coming down at midnight. By Thursday morning the ground was completely soggy and was beginning to penetrate basement walls. By Friday, our beloved landscape was altered to a degree that made it unrecognizable. The rivers had overflowed and abandoned their ancient course as if drunk and malicious. Their mighty force swept away buildings and bridges like dried leaves raked from a lawn. Lives have been lost. Entire communities swept away. The rivers have receded, and reveal an apocalyptic scene of bare earth and architectural destruction. People are wailing. People are thirsty. People need help. We’re fortunate to report that all of our AVL-based staff have been accounted for. We’re in touch to ensure their basic needs are met. Next steps are obvious. Check on our neighbors, source clean water, mourn each loss, make a plan, move forward. Together. One day at a time.
