Over the last 25 years, Asterisk has had a hand in shaping the brand and experience for some of Central Texas’ best public places and development projects. Happy to share some recent work for a beautiful new mixed use destination by Fulcrum and GreyStreet Partners in San Antonio. Steps away from the city’s beloved Pearl District, Broadway East San Antonio (BESA) will offer area residents and visitors more to love. At full build-out, the 15-acre development will include a curated collection of national brand retail and restaurants, a hotel, and residential offerings alongside vibrant public spaces and programmed experiences. Building upon strong geometric forms and richly textured materials by KPF, we developed the project’s brand messaging, visual identity system, and marketing assets to connect San Antonio’s traditions with its bright future. The BESA visual identity program easily transitions from quiet restraint to dynamic expression. Custom typography references the details found in San Antonio’s signature tile mosaics, and an understated black and tan palette with a flexible framing device take cues from the lines and shadows of BESA’s dramatically beveled, jewel-toned window niches, seamlessly connecting digital marketing with site signage. #SanAntonio #BroadwayEastSA #SATX #PearlDistrict #SAArchitecture #VisitSanAntonio #DiscoverSATX #BrandDesign #IdentityDesign #LogoDesign #Design #MotionDesign #Signage #SignageDesign #VisualCommunicationDesign #GraphicDesign?? #VisualDesign #DesignInspiration #EnvironmentalDesign?? #EnvironmentalGraphics

AEC industry colleagues and friends: Looking for a unique gift for clients, employees, family and friends for the holidays? Let us suggest DinnerPlans?, Asterisk’s first retail product. These reusable placemats render Texas’ favorite foods in the visual language of old-school blueprints. They’re two-sided, washable, recyclable, and produced entirely in the Lone Star state. Each set includes six unique meals: tacos, BBQ, burger, sushi, ramen, and pancakes.? In addition to axon views, elevations, and section details, each meal establishes strict contractual obligations, written by Austinite Maggie Stephens. To wit, from the taco plate: “Soft flour and/or corn tortillas may be substituted for crunchy taco shells; jicama and cauliflower tortillas are not recommended except for diners residing north of IH-40 or in localities where taco assembly code requires adherence to vegan accessibility standards.” Available in quantity to industry colleagues at wholesale pricing through November 15th. Message us directly for details. #architecture #engineering #construction #holidaygifts #AEC #dinnerplans #tableware

We snagged a nice honor at the SEGD design conference in Dallas last week. Our work at the Austin HQ of NI (National Instruments) earned a merit award in the Branded Environments category. The SEGD Global Design Awards ceremony honored 29 of nearly 300 entries submitted by firms from around the world. Ours is the only Texas-based firm to have won an SEGD honor this year, making this a fun win to land in our home state. The awards set the standard of excellence for experiential graphic design, and encompass seven categories that represent key practice areas: branded environments, digital experiences, exhibitions, placemaking, public installations, strategy/research/planning, and wayfinding. A multidisciplinary jury evaluated projects based on their effectiveness in connecting people to place, creating unique and memorable user experiences while solving design challenges. This latest award makes our work with NI a hat trick in the design awards circuit this year, joining honors from AIGA Design and Graphis Inc. See the full NI case study on our website, or enjoy a tour of this year’s winners at segd.org. We’re grateful to the wonderful client team at NI; Gensler for planning and interiors; and Innovative Environments and Serigraphics for fabrication and installation. Special thanks to DCL (Design Communications Ltd.) for sponsoring (and making) this year’s awards. #SEGDGlobalDesignAwards #GlobalDesignAwards #GDA #2024SEGDGlobalDesignAwards #2024GlobalDesignAwards #2024GDA

For much of the work we do, a successful project begins with a great brand identity system. And for five years and counting, a lot of those brands have been thoughtfully defined by Asterisk designer Oscar Morris. From typography and color to imagery and illustration, Oscar has crafted and orchestrated visual DNA packages for places, companies, and not-for-profits in Austin and well beyond. Please join us in celebrating ?? our favorite marks man (and pun-master) on his fifth anniversary with our team.

Congrats to Andersson / Wise and a visionary client team for a big win at last night's AIA Austin event. ?? Asterisk is grateful to have contributed to shaping the guest experience at Shield Ranch via signage / wayfinding and donor recognition. Development of the project's interpretive graphics was our opportunity to learn about everything from the magical rainwater collection and solar harvesting systems to the composting loos. Something new every day.
???? Huge congrats to Andersson / Wise for clinching the AIA Austin 2024 Design Award of Excellence for their outstanding work on the Campsite at Shield Ranch! Jurors praised the team’s remarkable dedication in delivering this extraordinary, sustainable project at a rarely achieved level, and described the Campsite as having a “longing for the outside.” Kudos to the entire team for this well-deserved recognition! ?? The awards ceremony was held on May 15 at the Austin PBS Media Center. ??? Learn more about the project at:?https://lnkd.in/dN_vU9sG

Please join us in welcoming Chuck Sanders to the firm, in the role of Senior Experiential Designer. ?? We’ve known Chuck for nearly two decades and have collaborated on several complex, high-profile projects in recent years. Chuck’s considerable design sensibility is matched by his technical knowledge and his tenacity for details — lots of details — delivering signage, wayfinding and graphics projects that are equal parts beautiful, functional, and thoughtful. In addition to his experience in branding and UX design, our work together includes extensive programs for NI (National Instruments)’s Austin HQ and global campuses; 3M’s offices at Parmer; Austin’s Seaholm district; and various mixed-use and workplace developments in the area. Outside of his professional pursuits, Chuck is a MacGyver of sorts, juggling all manner of home improvement projects while raising a family in Austin.

Toasting the completion of Asterisk's work (name, brand, marketing, signage) with Alex Perkins and the Greystar and consultant teams for a new —?and blue! — part of the Austin skyline.
As we approach final completion of The Waller, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank and praise the many partners who have contributed to our project. We wanted a design that was bold yet cohesive, and felt connected to the eclectic qualities of Austin. We wanted to emphasize social activation in a way that invited the public in, and leverage the mixed-use possibilities our site inherently had to offer. The team took our ideas and executed our vision tremendously. All with the support of our amazing partners at Ivanhoé Cambridge and PSP Investments.
