The 2023 Daylighting to Save Lives Bill (AB 413), authored by Assemblymember Alex Lee and co-sponsored by CalBike, prohibits parking within 20 feet of crosswalks to increase visibility and reduce collisions. The law, effective January 1, 2024, allows cities to use the newly available space for purposes like bicycle parking.

Denver launched an e-bike rebate program in April 2022, offering up to $300 for regular e-bikes and $500 for e-cargo bikes. The program was a huge success, distributing nearly 15,000 vouchers and inspiring similar initiatives across the U.S. However, critics argue that without better bike lanes, the impact on reducing emissions is limited.

Essential infrastructure
Bike lanes benefit more than just bikers. A new Rutgers University study found that bicycle lanes in New Jersey considerably slowed motor vehicle speeds. While the improvement was largest with delineated lanes, even painted lanes had an impact. Slower vehicle speeds improve safety for people on two wheels by addressing one of the most common collisions, but they also help protect everyone on the road. Simple, more affordable projects like this are essential to getting to zero traffic deaths.

Today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $172 million in grants to 257 communities through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program created in President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. “Improving streetscapes and dangerous stretches of highway can save lives, and the people who rely on our roads and streets everyday often already know where improvements are needed but until now lacked the funding to address them,” said?U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “With this latest round of grants, funding will flow directly to communities across the country to help put life-saving projects in motion, building on our ongoing work to bring traffic fatalities down to the only number that’s acceptable: zero.”?? "Currently, "registered vehicle owners will receive mailed warnings for infractions like parking in bike and bus lanes," CDOT stated. "Beginning on December 5, drivers will receive a warning notice for the first offense, with subsequent violations resulting in fines." In the near future, the technology will also be used to enforce metered parking."

"While advocates look at dedicated bicycle lanes as encouraging more people to travel by bike?—?resulting in less traffic congestion, safer commutes for cyclists and?reduced greenhouse gas emissions?— some motorists blame them for causing more congestion. But research shows that dedicated bicycle lanes are not behind perceived traffic congestion and can have many benefits."
