AIR Member Julia Barton will be presenting "The Hidden Grammar of Audio Stories" at the Power of Narrative Conference in Boston, Massachusetts at 3:30pm on Saturday, March 29th. About the session: What are the characteristics of a good radio story, narrative series, or interview show? What kinds of reporting projects make for good podcasts? This session is for podcast-curious and seasoned audio professionals. We'll learn to identify how various audio formats speak to audiences, how writing for the ear differs from writing for the page, and how to avoid impulses that can make audio stories harder to pull together (and harder for listeners to follow). Presenter Julia Barton is a longtime story editor for public radio and commercial podcasts. She recently completed a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. She was executive editor at Pushkin Industries, where she developed and edited shows, including "Revisionist History" with Malcolm Gladwell, "Against the Rules" with Michael Lewis, and "The Last Archive" with Jill Lepore.

  • For today’s AIR member spotlight we’re highlighting?Rasha Aridi, a freelance science journalist and radio producer at Science Friday. She started her career studying wildlife conservation, which included babysitting bear cubs, climbing trees to monitor macaws, and chasing lizards around a lab. Growing tired of analyzing data, Rasha realized that she had much more fun talking about science than actually doing it. Now a science journalist, Rasha spends her days nerding out with researchers and relaying that information to SciFri's listeners. She loves stories that weave science, identity, and culture together to challenge people's perspectives of science and the world. And, of course, she loves a good critter story. For today’s AIR member spotlight we’re highlighting Rasha Aridi has degrees in wildlife conservation and multimedia journalism from Virginia Tech. Before joining Science Friday, she learned all things audio as an intern for NPR's Short Wave and then at Science Vs from Gimlet. Before realizing that radio was more fun than writing, she wrote for outlets like Science Magazine, Smithsonian, The Guardian, and Science News for Kids. Learn more about Rasha: https://lnkd.in/ecY7EJQw.
