Together We're Stronger. Supporting Independent Schools in Maryland and The District of Columbia.
关于我们
AIMS is a vibrant association of about 120 independent schools in Maryland and the District of Columbia. These schools serve more than 45,000 students in grades PK - 12. AIMS' mission is to support its member schools by providing: Professional development workshops, conferences, and retreats for teachers, administrators, and school trustees. AIMS events, which total more than 70 each year, include the Annual Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center, attended by more than 2000 educators and more than 100 exhibitors; a technology retreat on the Eastern Shore; the annual conference for Heads of Schools in Annapolis; and many others throughout the year. Rigorous and effective accreditation services. The AIMS accreditation process holds member schools accountable to standards and supports their ongoing efforts to strengthen their curriculums and pedagogy. Public advocacy that protects their independence from governmental regulation. The Executive Director is available to make presentations to the Boards of Trustees of AIMS-member schools on the strategic environment and trustee decision-making in uncertain times.

We too get asked the question, "Why would anyone want to be a head of school these days?" Mark Crotty shares his take below. My fave? "No other role in a school empowers you with such a fulfilling sense of mastery, autonomy, and purpose."
“Why would anyone want that job?’ I hear this question frequently about headship at an independent school. In fact, I seem to hear it with greater regularity each year. I understand the reasons, particularly when it comes from someone who never has served in that role. Even heads themselves sometimes wonder why they stay in their jobs. It’s a unique, complex, consuming job, filled with difficult moments and trying stretches. Headship also is an amazing job. Not for everyone, but for the right person. “Right” is about more than experience and fit. It’s about temperament, perspective, and motivation. Since I’m going to be engaging in some search work along with other consulting and presenting, I’ve been reflecting on how I’d answer that opening question for people. What follows are some reasons (assuming you end up in a good situation). ·?????While people talk about headship being lonely, in many ways it’s the least confining job in a school in that you connect to some degree with everyone and everything. The loneliness is others not understanding the role rather than a lack of connection and engagement. ·?????Each day likely will bring something new, and as head you must be learning continually, including things you may never have considered. ·?????Relationships take on a new intimacy, not just professionally but also personally. People confide in you and place great trust in you, thrusting you into a pastoral role. ·?????You get the chance to build and nourish a team of leaders, marshalling them towards a common vision and helping them grow through the process. You may even inspire some to become heads. ·?????Your board will comprise some talented, very cool people with whom you can partner and strategize. ·?????You’ll realize even more deeply what it means to be a servant leader, and if you become cocky, something or someone will humble you. ·?????You can have a massive long-term, wide-ranging impact on an institution. ·?????No other role in a school empowers you with such a fulfilling sense of mastery, autonomy, and purpose. You won’t feel these things all the time, and certain days will make you wonder if the job is worth the grief. At times it may not be. But over the long haul it very much is. Our division heads were lucky enough to learn from a hilarious, insightful and actionable presentation from Ken Rogers today on best ways to address challenging adult behaviors. We laughed while we hurriedly scribbled his nuggets of succinct wisdom, noshing on our delicious bagels in our spacious meeting room at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School.

For our aspiring leaders, there are some great interview questions in Moira Kelly's post below to which you should know your answers! Example of the kinds of questions and cues: "Tell me about a time when you received feedback that was difficult to hear. How did you process it, and what specific actions did you take as a result?"?Listen for: Specific examples of implementing changes, emotional maturity in handling criticism, and evidence of lasting behavioral change."
Not everyone is coachable. They may have talent and potential, but they may not be coachable. If you are building a team that can grow and adapt, search for coachability. Ross Peters EXPLO Elevate David Torcoletti Tung Trinh Susan R. Perry, PhD, MSW, LCSW https://lnkd.in/e7BnteqP

I am tremendously proud of our GDS Policy Institute, now a decade old. High School students engaging with and impacting real world problems. For the first time this summer, the program will be open to students from around the DMV.
