Well, friends, I can hardly believe it, but the publication of my biography of Henry Christophe, *The First and Last King of Haiti*, is just around the corner!
In this time when people spread lies about Haiti and would rather talk about made-up controversies, I think it is more important than ever to keep telling true stories from Haiti's rich past. I spent more than a decade researching and writing this biography, and I am so excited that the early readers for the book have loved it, calling it "magnificent," "indispensable," "a tour-de-force," and a "signal work from one of Haiti's leading historians."
I can't wait for more people to be able to read the tale of this remarkable life, and I very much hope that in continuing to insist on telling nuanced and deeply researched stories about Haiti, instead of paying outsized attention to the lies, the media and journalists will start giving attention to the important role that revolutionaries like Christophe played in making our modern world when they made Haiti the first country to permanently abolish slavery in 1804.
Especially for a first time trade book author like me, *pre-orders* can make a huge difference in how much media attention a book ultimately gets. So, my publisher Alfred A. Knopf has *The First and Last King of Haiti* available for pre-order wherever books are sold. I'm partial to Bookshop.org though, since they support indie bookstores (https://lnkd.in/em98t4sy...)
