College athletics is facing unprecedented changes in the wake of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s court losses, including one in 2021 that allowed student athletes to cash in on their name, image, and likeness and to transfer to other schools without sitting out. The payment of student athletes has disrupted recruiting and can have an impact on both incoming and outgoing revenue to higher education institutions for the foreseeable future. Whether your institution's athletic program is small or large, the role of athletics should be a significant topic of interest and concern for your board. AGB Receives Mellon Foundation Grant to Strengthen Board Leadership on Academic Freedom & Free Speech ? Academic freedom and free speech are the foundation of American higher education. These principles drive discovery, innovation, and prepare students for an increasingly complex world. But today, these core values face growing challenges, and governing boards must be ready to protect institutional autonomy and uphold open inquiry. With support from the Mellon Foundation, AGB is launching a new initiative to equip trustees with the knowledge, tools, and strategies they need to safeguard these principles. Through research, peer discussions, expert insights, and digital resources, this initiative will help boards strengthen their leadership and protect the quality and integrity of higher education. Why now? Because strong, independent boards are essential to ensuring higher education remains a place where inquiry flourishes and innovation thrives.
