When strategic planners, data visualizers, photographers, filmmakers, comms, operations and event-planning experts walk into a cafe: the conversation bounces around, connections are discovered - or made. We had such a good time meeting for breakfast at Roux in Hyde Park last week, hosted by Leslie R Cain, MA of Bryn Mawr Institute. Present were ACN members who were south siders— and people who love the South Side: Melanie Stathis (from left) Rena Henderson Mason, Fernando Avila, Gordon Mayer, Julie F. Simpson, Tweed Thornton, and Emilio Albertini. Next week, Chicago's North Side gets their turn (11/13: sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gDa7rt2T ). And we're working on more opportunities for members everywhere including professional matchmaking (the pilot round just closed, more news about results soon!)

Boosting this conversation & Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley!
Last month I attended Forefront (Illinois) Annual Summit celebrating 50 years with some of my Association of Consultants to Nonprofits colleagues. One of my big takeaways was from seeing john a. powell speak about the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley. He spoke about human's tendency to 'other' people, be it by race, height, or belief, and how it prevents us from giving one another an essential need, 'belonging'. It applied many of the same principles from my design days - if you design for the majority (or the assumption) of body type or ability you make things difficult for everyone else. As a lefty, the focus on right-handedness being the default made feeling 'othered' a unique part of my life. But it wasn't necessary, it's not hard to design for all hand types. Seeing this happen to other people because of their differences (height, age, culture, ability) makes me want to do better. In the nonprofit sector, we can make sure we are not just saying "welcome to all" but acting on it in a way that isn't watered down or boring. Have you heard of the Othering & Belonging Institute? What gives you a sense of belonging? I'd love to hear what takeaways others had from the summit, Carol White Melanie Stathis Barb Vicory Emily Petway Dinaz Mansuri. Great to see you there!

Join us on Tuesday, March 19 for Overcoming Resistance and Driving Change with Anne Hager. In the dynamic landscape of nonprofit consulting, the capacity to drive change and foster innovation is more than a skill—it's a necessity. However, the path to transformative change is often obstructed by unspoken (and sometimes even outspoken) resistance. This workshop offers a simple framework tailored for nonprofit consultants, equipping them with the understanding and tools necessary to navigate and dismantle these barriers, thereby facilitating more effective implementation of change within their client organizations. Free for ACN members. Register at https://lnkd.in/gXatBRRt
