Ruth Gonzalez, PhD, is the first US-born Hispanic woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics. Interested in applying mathematics to real-world problems, Gonzalez worked on modeling problems in underwater acoustics, used to position submarines to avoid detection. She earned her doctorate from Rice University in 1986, while working full-time as a geophysical mathematician at Exxon.
