While many states are working towards building strong policies and infrastructure around middle school career exploration, the question remains: How are these policies translating into effective experiences for young people in real life? I'm looking forward to participating on this panel at ASU+GSV Summit with Julie Lammers and Kathleen (Boyle) Mathers to dive into what effective middle school career exploration opportunities look like. We’ll discuss: ? What middle schoolers really want from career exploration programming. ? A new initiative launched this spring to drive the work of leading states to refine and strengthen policy at the state level. ? This morning I had the pleasure of celebrating Middle Level Education Month with these incredible future teachers from Otterbein University. We spent time reflecting on our own young adolescent experiences and the adults who guided and supported us along the way. DYK: One of the primary factors that encourages early career educators to consider the middle grades is an excellent middle level teacher from their own student experience? Just one reason why it’s so important that every middle school student can name an adult advocate at school!

Still buzzing from an amazing 2025 Hawaii Middle Grades Summit! In addition to bringing together more than 1,400 middle grades educators, we celebrated the 1st HIDOE Schools of Distinction & recognized staff across the state w/the inaugural Adult Advocate Award. From teachers to custodial staff, these professionals make sure kids feel they belong at school. ??
