Meet the recipients of the 2024 ACM A.M. Turing Award, Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton! They are recognized for developing the conceptual and algorithmic foundations of reinforcement learning - one of the most important approaches for creating intelligent systems. Barto is Professor Emeritus of Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst at University of Massachusetts Amherst . Sutton is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alberta , a Research Scientist at Keen Technologies, and a Fellow at Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) . In a series of papers beginning in the 1980s, Barto and Sutton introduced the main ideas, constructed the mathematical foundations, and developed important algorithms for reinforcement learning. Please join us in congratulating the two recipients! Learn more about their groundbreaking contributions here: https://lnkd.in/gpMNSSXr

关于我们
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges. As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, magazines, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia. ACM authors are among the world's leading thinkers in computing and information technologies, providing original research and firsthand perspectives. Founded at the dawn of the computer age, ACM’s reach extends to every part of the globe, with more than half of its more than 100,000 members residing outside the U.S. Its growing membership has led to Councils in Europe, India, and China, fostering networking opportunities that strengthen ties within and across countries and technical communities. Their actions enhance ACM’s ability to raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues around the world.

This ByteCast episode is now out: see https://lnkd.in/dqBrjdvF Thanks to Darja Smite for being on the podcast, and the Staff at ACM, Association for Computing Machinery HQ, most notably Yan Timanovsky! ??
Work from the office, work from home, or from anywhere in the world: since the Covid pandemic everyone in the IT world has their own experiences. Currently, many companies try to get everybody back into the office. Does it work? Why would they in the first place? Today, I'll interview Darja Smite for #ByteCast, the podcast of the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery and we'll be talking about her work on the differences in work locations, and also on Offshore vs. Onshore IT work.

To preprint or not to preprint? ?? AI ethics is a field where people with very different backgrounds meet. And very different publication practices. Some come from a background where research is not really research until it has been peer reviewed and published in traditional outlets, while others upload their papers as soon as they're done writing. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each approach? In this article, I take stock of the benefits and challenges for the AI ethics field, and seek common ground. Two minutes with 2024 A.M. Turing Award winner, Richard Sutton. “I think, today, I’m ready to say that it’s obvious that we need to learn by trial and error. Reinforcement learning is about, really, learning from experience.” Faculty of Science, University of Alberta Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) ACM, Association for Computing Machinery
