Our very own Ada Lam has been with AGC Houston for over 25 years, and has recently decided that she will be retiring by the end of this year. Ada's impact on our chapter truly cannot be understated, as she has been a major factor in our success over the last two+ decades, I know both of my predecessors Pat Kiley & Jerry Nevlud would certainly agree. It is very bittersweet for me/us, because Ada is one of those people who can never truly be "replaced" and we will certainly miss her as part of our awesome team, but we are very excited for her to begin the next chapter in life! I know she has lots of travel planned! With that, AGC Houston is looking for a new Controller to try and fill Ada's exceptionally large shoes! How can a person actually have an impact on the legislative process? I'm so glad you asked! We got to show our Leadership AGC participants the answer to that question earlier this week when we attended the AGC-TBB Legislative Day up in Austin on Wednesday. This year's class, along with members of our Government Affairs Committee, got the opportunity to meet with almost all of our Houston area Representatives and Senators, to let them know about the priority bills for our industry. We got to see the value of personal connections first hand, as we met with not only staff members but several of the Reps themselves because of those strong connections that our staff and members have made over the years. Trust me when I say our state elected officials genuinely WANT to hear from their constituents about issues!! They KNOW who we are, then KNOW that AGC Houston provides the voice for the commercial construction industry, and they all WANT to help us. Sure the legislative process can seem daunting, and the thought of talking with elected officials can seem intimidating, but over 40 of our members saw on Wednesday that those Reps and Senators are just normal people like you and me. We saw that they're not experts in all fields, and truly want to hear from those experts on matters that affect them. Too many people had an impact in leading our groups on Wednesday to adequately tag/thank them, and we are truly grateful for our member leaders, but I will shout out Catherine Morgan for doing a great job running point on scheduling all our meetings and handling logistics! That’s a wrap! Yesterday, our 2025 Leadership AGC class and members of the AGC Houston Government Affairs Committee joined forces with fellow AGC chapters across Texas at the Texas Capitol for TBB Legislative Day. Together, we met with Senators and Representatives to discuss key Texas Building Branch priority bills for the 2025 legislative session.
