ABC Convention is also a great time to recognize members' outstanding construction projects from the previous year. The Excellence in Construction??Awards celebration honors the nation's most?innovative and high-quality?construction projects?and world-class?safety programs. Besides winning a chapter award, John T. Jones Construction Co. earned a National Pyramid Award for its City of South South City, Nebraska Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements. Accepting the award at Convention were Michael Jones and Tim Boland! Congratulations to them and the entire team at John T. Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national association representing nearly 22,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms in 72 chapters across the United States. ABC's membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors of the industry. ABC is the construction industry's voice with the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the federal government and with state and local governments, as well as with the news media. ABC's mission is the advancement of the merit shop construction philosophy, which encourages open competition and a free-enterprise approach that awards contracts based solely on merit, regardless of labor affiliation. Through its national office and chapters, ABC's objective is to provide its members with an organization to deal with issues on an industry-wide basis. ABC's activities include government representation, legal advocacy, education, workforce development, communications, technology, recognition through national and chapter awards programs, employee benefits, information on best practices and business development through an online contractor search directory.

The Construction Management Competition is ABC’s hallmark event promoting careers in construction management. This year, two of our ABC Student Chapters competed at Convention: MSU-Mankato and MSU-Moorhead. They went head to head against 33 other university programs from across the country. Prior to convention, each team acted as a general contractor on a real-world project and put together a price and technical proposal. At convention, the teams were given a significant change order for their project and they had to work through that in a short window of time. These young men and women, like those who competed in the National Craft Championships are the next generation of our industry! #ABCMeritShopProud

Another must-see event at ABC Convention is the National Craft Championships. Over 200 apprentices in 12 crafts from member companies and ABC training centers across the country complete a written exam then a 6-hour, hands-on practical evaluation. This year, two electrical apprentices from Knobelsdorff and two carpentry apprentices from Rice Companies competed. A big shout out to Justin Meyer from Rice Companies for earning the silver medal and safety award in carpentry. Seeing each of our member's competitors put their skills to the test against fellow apprentices showed what it means to be #ABCMeritShopProud! Associated Builders and Contractors

Last month, thousands ABC members from across the country descended on Las Vegas to celebrate the association's 75th Anniversary at Convention. This week we'll post highlights from our chapter's time there. Chapter Board Members Dave Zavoral, Mike Bauer, and Steven Johnson were sworn in at the National Board Meeting. Later that day our chapter was recognized for outstanding membership growth and retention. To kick off the rest of the convention, Lee Greenwood surprised us by singing "God Bless the USA."
