?? Excited to share a project we worked on last summer in Galway, Ireland! We had the incredible opportunity to contribute to the growth of the virtual production industry in Ireland by sharing our expertise and equipping local professionals with the right tools. This initiative was made possible thanks to the efforts of Alan Duggan CEO at ARDAN, the University of Galway, and Galway City of Film. For this project, we shot a short technical demo based on a story written by Anthony Koithra, using both green screen and LED volume techniques. Our setup included: ?? Blackmagic Design URSA Mini ?? stYpe RedSpy tracking system ?? ROE Visual Black Pearl LED panels ?? ASSIMILATE Live FX for green screen processing ?? Unreal Engine as the core production tool To streamline collaboration, we integrated Diversion, an Unreal plugin that allowed our team in Spain to seamlessly update the virtual environment while the Galway team tested on set in real-time. A huge thanks to Kieran Cooney from Cue One Ireland for providing top-tier equipment and support! The result? A successful collaboration with Ryan Mckenna, a pioneer in virtual production in Ireland and the creator of the country's first fully virtual production short film. Together, we filmed the same shots twice—once on LED volume and once on green screen—allowing us to compare workflows and production techniques. ?? The entire shoot took just one day, with sound and editing completed the following days. While the green screen shots required additional time, the previs captured on set significantly sped up the process. This project was a fantastic learning experience and a step forward for virtual production in Ireland. This is the outcome of a Virtual Production Residency in Galway (Ireland) we did last summer. It was our first time dealing with LED Walls and professional tracking systems, so we had to find out how to use it before shooting... ?? It was an amazing knowledge exchange and learning experience where we had to push to the limits Unreal Engine and even find other ways to shoot on LED walls like ASSIMILATE Live FX solution which truly simplifies the process. Two months to write the script, create blockout and animatics, 3D build our vision of Galway′s Spanish Arch (Photogrammetry), learn how to shoot in an hybrid VP Studio (LED/Green screen), find actor and costumes, motion capture for virtual characters, shoot, edit, sound and post production. Solving problems and sharing results: I was asked to do a use case/article about how I utilized Spout/Textureshare techniques combining Off World Live’s Live-Streaming Toolkit for Unreal Engine and ASSIMILATE Live FX. Spout/Textureshare bypasses the need for encoding or decoding video feeds, ensuring minimal latency, as the data is shared in real-time between applications. And you can use more than one stream simultaneously for inner and outer frustum, and/or pipe out other streams from Unreal Engine as you may find fit for your projects.
