When people think about emergency management, they often picture someone in a reflective vest, standing at a command post with maps, radios, and checklists. And while those technical skills are crucial, there’s another side to the job that’s just as important — soft skills. Emergency management isn’t just about knowing FEMA acronyms or memorizing the phases of disaster response (though trust me, those things do come in handy). It’s about working with people — stressed-out, scared, and sometimes stubborn people — and guiding them through chaos with confidence and compassion.

Calling the recent Southern California wildfires a “game changer,” emergency preparedness experts recently shared with McKnight’s Senior Living what, in their view, went right with the response, and what could be improved before the next emergency. ‘This was a game changer’ For more than two decades, said Stan Szpytek, president of Arizona-based national consulting firm Fire and Life Safety Inc., he and others like him have been training senior living and other long-term care providers about how to prepare for the “big one” — the earthquake, hurricane, wildfire or other natural disaster that was coming. The rapid onset and extraordinary environmental conditions that fueled the recent Southern California wildfires created what Szpytek called the “perfect storm” that put providers “quickly behind the eight ball.” Even with advance notice, he told McKnight’s Senior Living, providers had no indication that this incident — particularly the Eaton fire in Los Angeles County — would affect them so dramatically.

CHICAGO (AP) — The country's preeminent federal fire training academy canceled classes, effective immediately, on Saturday amid the ongoing flurry of funding freezes and staffing cuts by President Donald Trump's administration. The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that National Fire Academy courses were canceled amid a “process of evaluating agency programs and spending to ensure alignment with Administration priorities,” according to a notice sent to instructors, students and fire departments. Instructors were told to cancel all future travel until further notice. Firefighters, EMS providers and other first responders from across the country travel to the NFA's Maryland campus for the federally funded institution's free training programs.
