More than two-thirds of law enforcement agencies in the U.S. serve rural areas (fewer than 10,000 residents). Officers in small and rural agencies face the same daily challenges as their colleagues in urban departments. However, many rural areas face healthcare issues where the population-to-provider ratio for mental health care can be as great as 30,000 to one. Regardless of an agency's size, having a safety and wellness program is crucial to ensuring the health of officers. That's why peer support programs can be a vital part of officer wellness. Check out how some small and rural agencies have implemented peer support programs. ?? #ASPIRE #CommunityPolicing #DiversityinPolicing #SmallandRuralPolice

Officers show and express their experiences in law enforcement in many ways. Police1, a leading online resource guide for law enforcement, has opened up a poetry column for law enforcement professionals. This recently published poem by Officer Adam Mask highlights the burdens that follow officers even when they return home. Mental health and wellness are vital to officer’s overall well-being. Be sure to stay tuned for our Just Science Episode featuring Chief Reuben Ramirez as he talks about the effects of policing on officers and the importance of a positive mental health and wellness culture within law enforcement. #ASPIRE #CommunityPolicing #DiversityinPolicing
