When it comes to personal climate hygiene, one of the most impactful things you can do is move your money OUT of the fossil fuel banking system. Why is this so important? Well, if you’re wondering where all the (seemingly limitless) financing for fossil fuel development keeps coming from, you might be surprised to hear that YOUR BANK is fronting the cash! How bad is it? Well in just the last decade, each of the “Big 4” US banks – Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo – has lent HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars to the fossil fuel industry, according to the “Banking on Climate Chaos 2024 Report” by Rainforest Action Network, BankTrack, Sierra Club and others. (The worst offender is Chase, with more than $430 billion lent to the fossil fuel industry since 2016.) These ongoing loans to big polluters like Exxon and Shell are funding the construction of the pipelines, oil rigs, and coal mines that continue to pump CO2 into the air and warm our planet. So if you bank with the “Big 4,” your money is implicated in this extractive system! A recent report by Project Drawdown concluded that keeping $1,000 a year in a traditional big bank has roughly the same carbon footprint as flying from New York to Seattle. But the GOOD NEWS is that you can take your money out of this extractive system by banking with a local credit union, a nonprofit bank, or a national bank that’s divested from fossil fuels.
