The recent Minnesota Housing Stability Coalition report confirms what many of us in the field already know: skyrocketing insurance costs, declining cash flow, and rising operating expenses are putting thousands of affordable housing units at risk. As part of this study, RS EDEN’s properties reflect the financial strain felt across the sector. We can’t afford to let the housing we’ve built slip away. That’s why RS EDEN is committed to preserving, protecting, and expanding housing stability for our residents and the broader community. Hennepin County’s approach of investing in existing properties, through its Repair + Grow program, is one critical step forward. The need for investment is far greater than one county can make alone. Solutions like flexible financing, regulatory reform, and sustainable funding for supportive services must follow. Affordable housing is not just about buildings. It’s about people. The individuals and families in RS EDEN’s housing rely on safe, stable, and affordable homes as they build their futures. As of yesterday, the state still has over $4MM in 2024 credit certificates available to issue. See MCN's full action alert here: https://lnkd.in/dPwD7wR5 According to MCN, "This legislation would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to designate section 501(c) nonprofits as “terrorist supporting organizations” at the Secretary’s discretion, without requiring the Secretary to share their full evidence or reasoning with accused nonprofits." Below is the email I sent to Rep. Angie Craig's aides. Craig voted for this bill when it was heard last week. It is likely to come up for a vote again this week. Please feel welcome to copy and adapt as you see fit. "Please encourage Rep. Craig to vote against HR9495.?I have served in the nonprofit world for 30+ years.?In all my years in the field, I have rarely seen fraud or abuse.?Instead, I have seen incredibly committed and hardworking people who make far less in salary, benefits, and retirement than their government colleagues. This bill does a disservice to nonprofits, which are part of the safety net for health and human services, energy assistance, housing, older adult supports, and services for individuals with disabilities, as well so many low-income and vulnerable people in the country.?In many cases, nonprofits?do work that should be the responsibility of government but which government is ill-equipped or unable to do or can’t do as cost-effectively. Please do not put the burden of proof on nonprofits, which are understaffed and under resourced.?Instead, please put the burden of proof on the individual or entity making the claim that the nonprofit is “terrorist supporting.”?This is consistent with the way the burden of proof works in other areas of the legal system. And, please make a clear distinction between serving vulnerable individuals who may be part of a group that others generally consider “terrorist” and actually supporting terrorism. It is unacceptable to allow the Secretary of the Treasury to unilaterally make these decisions without having to provide full disclosure of evidence used to make the decision with the nonprofit.?Please include a fair process so that vitally important nonprofits are not stripped of their tax-exempt status erroneously.?Putting the full power of these decisions in one entity’s hands without a fair process is a grave mistake."
